Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
Cylinder Head Replace1. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain cooling system. Remove spare tire from engine compartment.
2. Disconnect air cleaner snorkel flexible hose from front of vehicle, then the hoses from beneath the air cleaner. Remove air cleaner.
3. Disconnect accelerator cable and the choke and shutoff solenoid wiring from carburetor.
4. Disconnect vacuum and fuel evaporative hoses from carburetor and intake manifold.
5. Disconnect fuel hoses and lines from carburetor.
6. Remove carburetor.
7. Remove thermostat housing, leaving coolant hoses attached.
8. Remove timing belt cover.
9. Remove air pump and support bracket.
10. Remove alternator and position aside, leaving wiring connected.
11. Loosen timing belt tensioner and remove timing belt.
12. Remove upper timing belt shield.
13. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
14. Disconnect lines from EGR valve and remove valve from manifold.
15. Disconnect high tension wires from spark plugs.
16. Disconnect wiring from sending units located in cylinder head.
17. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts and stud nuts.
18. Remove cylinder head with intake and exhaust manifolds.

19. Reverse procedure to install. Torque cylinder head bolts and nuts, in sequence, Fig. 4. Torque bolts and nuts in two steps. First step, torque to 29 ft.lbs. Second step, torque to 61 ft.lbs.
