SUBJECT: AIR INJECTION PUMP

VEHICLES: All models
GENERAL: All Yugo models use a belt-driven pump to supply air to the exhaust manifold and catalytic converter. A centrifugal filter behind the pulley prevents airborne dust particles, water, and other impurities from entering the pump and causing internal damage.

NOTE: The pump unit must be covered when washing the engine compartment to prevent water or other solvents used in the cleaning process from entering the pump. Otherwise the pump may be damaged internally, as the filter works only when the pulley is turning.

SERVICE: The unit does not require any regularly scheduled internal maintenance, and should not be lubricated. Drive belt tension should be checked at 30000 mile intervals, and the mounts should be inspected for tightness during the diagnosis of any exceptional engine-related noises.
