Disassembly/Inspection/Assembly
DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove nut attaching shock absorber and control arm to stub axle and slip off screw and control arm. Note number and thickness of shims.
2. Remove nut attaching shock absorber to stub axle and slide off screw and shock absorber.
3. Remove brake drum by unscrewing wheel centering stud and the drum attachment screw.
4. Remove dust cover.
5. Remove nut attaching hub to stub axle and remove washer.
6. Using slide hammer tool No. A 47017 or equivalent, remove hub with bearing.
7. Remove safety plate and disconnect brake hose at wheel cylinder.
8. Remove brake backing plate to stub axle attaching screws and remove backing plate.
OVERHAUL & INSPECTION
1. Check control arms for distortion, replacing as necessary.
2. Check condition of rubber bushings inserted in control arms. The inside surface should not show friction marks with the pin. If rubber part of bushing is worn or not fully flexible, bushing must be replaced.
3. Remove nuts attaching pin to control arm.
4. Using driver tool No. A 47057 and press, push pin and free bushing from its seat in control arm.
First bushing should be only partly extracted from control arm so that pin is properly centered for removal of second bushing.
5. Using driver tool No. A 47057 or equivalent, extract rubber bushing from control arm on outer end.
6. Repeat step 5 on opposite side.
7. Insert new bushing in its seat on control arm and install driver tool No. A 47057 complete with cap. Turn screw on tool to force bushing into place.
ASSEMBLY
1. Attach backing plate to stub axle. Tighten to specifications.
2. Install wheel cylinder and brake shoes.
3. Assemble complete hub on stub axle, insert washer and tighten to specifications, then, using suitable tool, stake nut.
4. Install brake drum and dust cover.
5. Connect bottom end of shock absorber to stub axle and control arm, being sure to insert shims between bushings and shock absorber mounting bracket.
6. Loosely install self locking nut.
