Automatic Transmission Installation
Special Tools Required
- Engine Hanger Adapter VSB02C000015
- Engine Support Hanger, A and Reds AAR-T1256
- Subframe Adapter VSB02C000016
- Subframe Alignment Pin 070AG-SJAA10S

NOTE: Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
1. Install a new O-ring (A) on the torque converter (B), then install the torque converter on the mainshaft (C).
NOTE: Make sure the torque converter is fully engaged on the mainshaft, the stator shaft, and the ATF pump drive gear. Failure to do so will result in severe transmission or engine damage.
2. Install the 14 x 20 mm dowel pins (D) in the torque converter housing.
3. Place the transmission on a transmission jack, and raise the transmission to the engine level, then fit the transmission to the engine.
4. Install the rear transmission housing mounting bolts.
NOTE: Be careful not to damage the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor and the sensor harness.
5. Install the CKP sensor cover.
6. Install the front and lower transmission housing mounting bolts.
7. Remove the transmission jack.
8. Install the upper transmission housing mounting bolts.
9. Place the transmission jack under the transmission.
10. Install the front engine mount bracket with new bolts.
11. Install the rear engine mount bracket with new bolts.
12. Install a new set ring (A) on the intermediate shaft (B).
13. Clean the areas where the intermediate shaft is inserted into the transmission (differential) with solvent, and dry with compressed air. Apply ATF to the intermediate shaft splines (C), then install the intermediate shaft. Be sure not to allow dust or other foreign particles to enter the transmission.
NOTE:
- Do not wash the rubber parts with solvent.
- Insert the intermediate shaft carefully to prevent damaging the oil seal (D).
14. Install a new set ring (A) on the left driveshaft (B).
15. Clean the areas where the left driveshaft is inserted into the transmission (differential) with solvent, and dry with compressed air. Then install the left driveshaft. Be sure not to allow dust or other foreign particles to enter the transmission. Turn the steering knuckle fully outward, and slide the left driveshaft into the differential until you feel the set ring fully engage the side gear.
NOTE:
- Do not wash the rubber parts with solvent.
- Insert the left driveshaft carefully to prevent damaging the oil seal (C).
16. Apply the recommended grease to the right driveshaft inboard joint splines.
17. Slide the right driveshaft over the intermediate shaft splines until you feel the driveshaft fully engages the intermediate shaft set ring.
18. Install the lower transmission mounts with new bolts.
19. Remove the transmission jack.
20. Attach the subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) to the front subframe by looping the strap (A) over the front of the front subframe, then secure the strap with the stop (B), and tighten the wing nut (C).
21. Raise the transmission jack and line up the slots in the arms with the bolt holes on the corner of the jack base, then tighten the bolts.
22. Raise the front subframe up to the body, then loosely install new front subframe mounting bolts (A), the front stiffener mounting bolts (B), and new rear stiffener mounting bolts (C).
NOTE: Be careful when connecting these items:
- Front engine mount and its bracket
- Lower transmission mount and front subframe
- Damper forks and lower arms
23. Loosely tighten the front subframe mounting bolt (A) in the right rear stiffener until the front subframe insulator contacts the body; insert the subframe alignment pin through the positioning slot (B) on the right rear stiffener, through the positioning hole (C) on the front subframe, and into the positioning hole on the body.
24. Loosely tighten the front subframe mounting bolt in the left rear stiffener in the same manner in step 23.
25. Reinsert the subframe alignment pin through the positioning slot on the right rear stiffener, through the positioning hole on the front subframe, and into the positioning hole on the body, then tighten the front subframe mounting bolt to the specified torque.
26. Tighten the front subframe mounting bolt in the left rear stiffener in the same manner in step 25.
27. Tighten the front subframe mounting bolts in the right front stiffener and the left front stiffener to the specified torque.
28. Check that the positioning holes and slots are aligned using the subframe alignment pin.
29. Tighten the rear and front stiffener mounting bolts to the specified torque.
30. Remove the transmission jack and the subframe adapter.
31. Replace the front subframe middle mounting rubber bolts.
32. Install the lower transmission mount nuts.
33. Connect the knuckle ball joints (A) and the lower arms (B), then install the castle nuts (C).
NOTE: Do not install new cotter pin (D) onto the castle nut until the castle nut tightened to the specified torque.
34. Connect the damper forks (E) and the lower arms with new damper fork mounting bolts (F), then loosely tighten the new mounting nuts (G).
35. Loosely install new upper transmission mount bracket bolts (A).
36. Loosely install a new front engine mount bolt (A).
37. Set the washers (A) (8) in the positions shown. Loosely install new steering gearbox mounting bolts, then tighten the bolts in the numbered sequence shown.
NOTE: Check all of the steering gearbox mounting bolts, and retighten if necessary.

38. Install the rear engine mount upper bracket (A) with the rear engine mount (B), with a new bolt (C) and the bolts (D).
39. Install new rear engine mount bolts (A).
40. Loosely install a new rear engine mount bolt (B).
41. Apply molybdenum grease to the hole in the bushing (A) in the shift cable end (B). Install the shift cable bracket (C) with the two bolts (D).
42. Attach the shift cable end to the selector control lever (E), then insert the control pin (F) into the control lever hole through the shift cable end, and secure the control pin with the spring clip (G).
NOTE: Do not bend the shift cable excessively.
43. Install the shift cable cover (H).
44. Attach the torque converter to the drive plate with the eight bolts (A). Rotate the crankshaft pulley as necessary to tighten the bolts to half of the specified torque, then to the final torque, in a crisscross pattern. After tightening the last bolt, check that the crankshaft rotates freely.
45. Install the torque converter cover (B).
46. Connect the EPS ground subharness connector at the front of the front subframe.
47. Install exhaust pipe A with the bolts (B), new self-locking nuts (C), and new gaskets (D) (E) Service and Repair.
48. Remove the engine support hanger.
49. Remove the engine hanger adapter (VSB02C000015).
50. Install the harness cover bracket bolt (A).
51. Install the ignition coil cover.
52. Tighten the front engine mount bolt (A).
53. Install the front engine mount stop (B) with the vacuum hose clamp bracket (C), with new nuts (D).
54. Connect the vacuum hose (E) to the vacuum line (F), and install the vacuum hose on the clamp (G) at the mark (H).
55. Tighten the rear engine mount bolt to 78 Nm (8.0 kg-m, 58 lb-ft).
56. Tighten the upper transmission mount bracket bolts to 59 Nm (6.0 kg-m, 43 lb-ft).
57. Connect these connectors:
- Transmission fluid pressure switch B (3rd clutch) connector (A)
- A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve B connector (B)
- A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve C connector (C)
- Shift solenoid wire harness connector (D)
58. Install the harness clamps (E) on the clamp brackets (F).
59. Connect the input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor connector (A) and the output shaft (countershaft) speed sensor connector (B).
60. Connect the transmission range switch subharness connector (C), then install it on the connector bracket (D).
61. Install the ATF warmer/filter assembly.
NOTE: Be careful not to damage the pipes and fin part of the ATF warmer when installing it.
62. Install the A/F sensor connector (A) on the connector bracket (B).
63. Install the harness cover bracket (C), then install the harness cover clamps (D).
64. Connect the ATF warmer hoses (A) to the ATF inlet line (B) and the ATF warmer (C), then secure the hoses with the clips ATF Warmer Hose Replacement.
65. Connect the ATF warmer hose (A) to the ATF filter (B), then secure the hose with the clip ATF Warmer Hose Replacement.
66. Connect these connectors:
- A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve A connector (A)
- Transmission fluid pressure switch A (2nd clutch) connector (B)
67. Install the harness clamps (C) on the clamp brackets (D).
68. Install the battery base.
69. Install the air cleaner Service and Repair.
70. Install the intake air duct.
71. Connect PCM connectors A, B, and C, then install the PCM Service and Repair.
72. Do the battery installation procedure Removal and Replacement.
73. Install the strut brace (A), then install the brake booster vacuum hose (B) on its clamps (C).
74. Refill the transmission with ATF ATF Replacement.
75. Set the parking brake. Start the engine, and shift the transmission through all gears three times while pressing the brake pedal. Check the shift lever operation, the A/T gear position indicator operation, and the shift cable adjustment Adjustments.
76. Place a jack under the lower arm, and raise the front suspension to load it with the vehicle's weight. Do not place the jack against the ball joint pin of the knuckle.
Tighten the damper fork mounting nut while holding the mounting bolt to 64 Nm (6.5 kg-m, 47 lb-ft).
77. Tighten the ball joint mounting castle nuts to 78-88 Nm(8.0-9.0 kg-m,58-65 lb-ft), then install new cotter pins onto the castle nuts, then bend the cotter pin ends.
78. Install the front wheels.
79. Install the front splash shield Front Splash Shield Replacement.
80. Install the front grille cover Front Grille Replacement.
81. Start the engine with the shift lever in P or N, and warm it up to normal operating temperature (the radiator fan comes on).
82. Turn the engine off, and check the ATF level Procedures.
83. Check the front wheel alignment Service and Repair.
84. Do the road test A/T Road Test.
