REAR FINAL DRIVE FLANGED SHAFT OIL SEALS

OIL SEAL FOR RIGHT FLANGED SHAFT
(Final Drive Installed)






- Unscrew cover (arrows).






- Detach parking brake cable at right brake caliper.






- Disconnect trapezoidal arm from crossmember (arrow -A-) and carefully lower with transmission jack VAG 1883 A and vehicle jack support.
- Press parking brake cable out of holder (arrow -B-).
- Disconnect drive axle (arrow -C-) and lower. Press trapezoidal arm to right.
- Loosen flanged shaft.
To loosen mounting bolt, screw two bolts into flanged shaft and hold tight with assembly lever.
- Place oil drain tray below and remove flanged shaft.
- Press out seal with assembly lever.






- Drive in new flanged shaft oil seal as far as stop.
- Install flanged shaft and drive axle.
- Check gear oil in final drive.
Capacity and specification
- Attach parking brake cable.
- Bolt on cover.

Tightening Torques
- Flanged shaft to final drive: 10 Nm (7 ft lb) plus additional 1/4-turn (90°)
- Drive axle to flanged shaft:
M8 45 Nm (18 ft lb)
M10 80 Nm (59 ft lb)
- Trapezoidal arm to crossmember: 85 Nm (63 ft lb)

OIL SEAL FOR LEFT FLANGED SHAFT
(Final drive installed)






- Unscrew cover plate (arrows).






- Detach parking brake cable at brake caliper (arrows).






- Disconnect trapezoidal arm from crossmember (arrow -1-) and lower with transmission jack VAG 1383 and small car jack support.
- Press parking brake cable out of fixture (arrow -B-).
- Disconnect drive axle (arrow -C-).






- Detach exhaust pipe at front (arrows).






- Press exhaust system toward right (arrow -1-), then press trapezoidal arm toward left (arrow -2-) and lower drive axle (arrow -3-).
- Drain gear oil.






- Loosen flanged shaft.
- Pull flange out by inserting bolts as shown.

Note: Do not lose shim between flanged shaft and differential.






- Remove oil seal.






- Screw threaded rod -A- from retainer 3066 into differential.
- Install seal onto thrust washer 3066/1, and pull in with hex nut from 3066/1 as far as stop.
- Install flanged shaft and drive axle.
- Pour in gear oil.
Loosen cover at rear right for this step.
Capacity and specification, refer to "Application, Ratios, Capacities". Application and ID
- Tighten exhaust pipe at front again.
- Bolt on trapezoidal arm.
- Attach cover plate.
- Attach parking brake cable.

Tightening Torques
- Flanged shaft to final drive: 10 Nm (7 ft lb) plus additional 1/4-turn (90°)
- Drive axle to flanged shaft:
M8 45 Nm (18 ft lb)
M10 50 Nm (59 ft lb)
- Trapezoidal arm to crossmember: 85 Nm (63 ft lb)
