Engine Control Module Coding

NOTE: The Engine Control Module (ECM) and the vehicle are adapted to each other via coding. If coding that does not correspond to the vehicle is displayed, or the ECM was replaced, the ECM must be coded again. The coding always consists of a five-digit number.

PROCEDURE
- Connect the VAG 1551, Refer to Connecting and Operating VAG Scan Tool. Connection and Use of Test Equipment
- Advance through program until display appears as shown:

- Press buttons 0 and 7 to select "Code Control Module" function 07.
- Display will appear as shown:

- Press -0- button to confirm input.
- Display will appear as shown:

Enter code number XXXXX (0-32000)


- Enter code number applicable to particular vehicle and press -Q- button to confirm input.

ECM Coding Versions Table:





The code number is composed as shown in the following example:

^ USA: 0 1
^ Front wheel drive w/o ATC: 0
^ Auto. trans. 01K/01F: 4
^ Audi A6: 2
Code number = 0 1 0 4 2

ATC Indicator Light (ASR):




NOTE: Vehicles with Automatic Traction Control (ATC) can be recognized by the ATC indicator light in the instrument cluster.

If an illegal code number has been entered:
- The display will appear as shown:

Function is unknown or ->
cannot be carried out at the moment


- Input a correct ECM Code number.

If an applicable code number has been entered:
- The ECM identification with the coding input (e.g. 01042) appears on the display.
- Display will appear as shown:

If coding appears correctly:
- Press "Arrow" button.
- Display will appear as shown:

- Check and erase DTC memory. Refer to How to Read Diagnostic Trouble Codes. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
- Display will appear as shown:

- Press buttons -0- and -6- to select "End Output" function 06.
- Press -0- button to confirm input.
- Switch ignition OFF.
NOTE: The Engine Control Module (ECM) uses the coding that was input and shown on the display only after the ignition has been switched OFF once.

- Road test.
^ Driveability OK.
^ Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) does not come ON.
- Re-check DTC memory to be sure no malfunctions stored.

Incorrect ECM coding leads to:
^ Driveability problems (jerky shifting, jolts during load changes, etc.)
^ Increased fuel consumption
^ Exhaust emission out of specification
^ Decrease in transmission life
^ Storage in DTC memory of malfunctions that do not exist
^ Some functions may become inoperative (oxygen sensor control, EVAP canister purge regulator valve, etc.)
