Rear Axle Shaft Removal & Installation

Drive axle, removing and installing

Removing






Remove wheel trim (for vehicles with alloy wheels, remove center cap with special tool 3208).






Remove hex bolt from wheel hub - item -7- [1][2]Diagrams
Loosen wheel bolts and remove wheel.
Disconnect drive axle from drive flange.
Pull ABS wheel speed sensor out of wheel bearing housing.






Remove both lower control arm mounting bolts at subframe (one bolt not visible in illustration).
Remove suspension strut mounting bolts at lower control arm (arrow).






Remove connecting link mounting bolts at wheel bearing housing.
Remove wheel bearing housing mounting bolts at upper control arm.
Force wheel bearing housing down and remove drive axle (with help from second technician).

Installing

Installation is the reverse order of removal; note the following:
Force wheel bearing housing down to insert drive axle in hub (with second technician), and attach to drive flange.
Re-install ABS wheel speed sensor in wheel bearing housing.
