Connecting and Operating VAG Scan Tool
REQUIREMENTS- Fuses for engine electronics OK
- Fuel pump relay OK.
- Ground connections OK.
PROCEDURE
- Switch OFF ignition
Data Link Connector Location:
- Raise vehicle hood and locate Auxiliary Relay Station I (drivers side cowl area) and the Data Link Connectors (DLC).
Connecting VAG 1551:
Connect Scan Tool VAG 1551 using adaptor cable VAG 1551/1 to DLC.
- First connect black adaptor cable connector (voltage supply) to DLC # 1. These displays appear alternately as shown:

2 - Blink code output
NOTE: Do not connect the white adaptor cable connector if there is no display. Instead, check the voltage supply for the scan tool, Refer to Data Link Connector / Testing and Inspection. Data Link Connector
- Connect white adaptor cable connector to DLC # 2.
- The blue connector is not used
- To obtain additional operating instructions press the HELP button.
- To step through the program sequence, press the arrow button
SELECTABLE FUNCTIONS
- Depending on which function is required; either switch ON ignition or start engine and let idle.
NOTE: Not all functions are availible on all vehicles.
Check Engine Control Module Version - function 01:
- Check with engine idling.
Read Diagnostic Trouble Code Memory - function 02:
- Check with engine idling.
NOTE: If engine does not start, crank engine 4 to 6 seconds and leave ignition switched ON.
Output Diagnostic Test Mode - function 03:
- Switch ignition ON, but do not start engine.
Basic Setting - function 04:
- Let engine idle or switch ignition ON.
Erase Diagnostic Trouble Code Memory - function 05:
- Check with engine idling, leave ignition switched ON after checking the DTC memory.
End Output - function 06:
- Engine idling or ignition ON.
Code Control Module - function 07:
- Switch ignition ON.
Read Measuring Value Block - function 08:
- Let engine run and/or switch ignition ON.
Read Individual Measuring Values - function 09:
- Let engine idle at operating temperature.
OPERATING MODE
- Press button 1 to select operating mode "Rapid data transfer", Display will appear as follows:

Enter address word XX
RAPID DATA TRANSFER
After selecting operating mode Rapid data transfer select diagnostic function.
- Automated Test Sequence 00
- Engine Electronics 01
- Transmission Electronics 02
NOTE: Automated Test Sequence accesses the Diagnostic Memory of all installed systems that the VAG Scan Tool is cabable of accessing. The Scan Tool then outputs all Diagnostic Trouble Codes that are presently stored in memory.
- Press 0 and 1 buttons to select address word 01 "Engine electronics".Display will appear as follows:

- Press Q button to enter input. The engine control module identification number is indicated via the display, for example: 4A0 906 266 A. Display will appear as follows:

Coding 01042 WFC 06388
- Display breakdown is as follows:
^ ECM identification: 8A0 906 266 E (example)
^ Engine displacement: 2.8 liters
^ Engine type: V-engine, 6 cylinder
^ Number of valves per cylinder: 2 valves
^ Fuel injection system: MPI multiport fuel injection
^ ECM hardware and software version: D02
^ ECM coding: e.g. 01042
^ Current code number for the factory or service facility that was used to carry out the last coding and/or adaptation with the VAG 1551 scan tool: WSC 06388
- Check for correct ECM coding, Refer to ECM Coding Table. Engine Control Module Coding Table
NOTE: Only during idle speed do correct specifications regarding the engine control module number and related coding occur.
- Press "arrow" button to advance to the next step of the program.
If display appears as one of the following:
Rapid data transfer HELP
Control Module does not answer
or
Rapid data transfer HELP
Error in communications link
or
Rapid data transfer HELP
K wire not switching to Ground
or
Rapid data transfer HELP
K wire does not switch to B+
- Print out a list of possible causes by pressing the VAG 1551 HELP button
- After eliminating possible causes, reselect operating mode and address word, display appears as follows:

If function 02 Check DTC memory is to be selected and a printed list of DTC's is desired:
- Switch ON the printer using the print button, lamp in print button lights.
- When the printer is switched ON stored malfunctions are automatically printed out in sequence.
