Left Flange Shaft Seal and Grooved Ball Bearing

Procedure

General repair notes. Refer to => [ Repair Information ] Repair Information.

Observe cleanliness rules when working on automatic transmissions. Refer to => [ Cleanliness Working Conditions ] Cleanliness Working Conditions.

- Loosen the left drive axle bolt - arrow - on the wheel hub with the vehicle still standing on its wheels.





- Remove left front wheel.

- 2.5L TDI engine: Remove noise insulation for left driveshaft from wheel house - arrows -.





- Remove left driveshaft heat shield - arrows -.





The third bolt is not visible in the illustration.

- Remove the left drive axle - 1 - from the transmission flange shaft.

- Place Used Oil Collection and Extraction Device ( V.A.G 1782) under transmission.

- Remove the oil drain plug - arrow - and extract minimum 0.5 liters of gear oil from the final drive.





Oil must be extracted from the final drive, otherwise there is the danger that the gear oil may mix with ATF.

- Remove the Speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) (G22), if equipped. Refer to => [ Speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor ] 01V,01VA Transmission.

- Remove electrical connector bracket from flange shaft mounting bracket.

- Remove drive flange mounting bracket - arrows -.





- Pull out flange shaft.

If the transmission is installed, the left drive flange can be pulled out between the body and the subframe if the drive flange bracket is turned approximately 60° to the right.

- Remove circlip - arrow A - for grooved ball bearing.





- Press flange shaft out of flange shaft mounting bracket.





- Remove flange shaft seal using Extractor Lever ( VW 681).

- Press grooved ball bearing out of mounting bracket.





- Press new grooved ball bearing into mounting bracket.





- Coat outer circumference and sealing lip of shaft seal with axle oil.

- Drive in new sealing ring to stop of sealing ring installer, do not distort while doing this.





Installation position: Open side of shaft seal faces transmission.

- Mount the transmission with the Speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) (G22): place the Speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) (G22) on the flange shaft - arrow -.





Installation position: Yoke on drive gear must engage in grooves on flange shaft.

Secure location of drive gear by coating contact surface with grease, if necessary.

- Press mounting bracket with grooved ball bearing onto flange shaft.





- Insert circlip - arrow A -.





- Replace the O-ring - arrow B - in flange shaft mounting bracket.





- Check drive flange for sharp edges on transmission side of flange end - arrow - and if necessary, deburr.





- Install left drive flange in transmission.

When sliding in, left drive flange must be carefully guided by hand to prevent damage to the double seal in transmission.

Further installation in reverse order, paying attention to the following:

- Connect the left driveshaft to the flange shaft.

- Mount the front wheel.

- Fill the gear oil for front final drive => [ Gear Oil in Front Final Drive, Filling after Repair ] Gear Oil in Front Final Drive, Filling After Repair.
