Remove left drive flange
- Loosen bolt drive axle/wheel hub while the vehicle is still standing on its wheels.
- Remove wheel.
- Remove heat shield for left drive axle - arrows -, if installed.
Third bolt is not visible in the illustration.
- Remove left drive axle - 1 - from transmission flange and remove. Refer to
- Place drip tray (VAG1306) underneath.
- Remove oil filler plug (arrow) and siphon off at least 0.5 L gear oil from front final drive using oil siphoning unit (VAG1358A )
• Oil must be syphoned from final drive, otherwise there is a risk that the gear oil could mix with the ATF.
- Remove Speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). Refer to => [ Speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor ] Speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor.
- Remove harness connector bracket from mounting bracket for drive flange.
- Remove drive flange mounting bracket (arrows).
- Pull out drive flange.
• The left drive flange can be pulled out between body and subframe with the transmission installed if the mounting bracket for drive flange is turned approx. 60° to the right against the installation position.
Removing seal
- Remove circlip (arrow A) for grooved ball bearing.
- Press drive flange out of drive flange mounting bracket.
- Remove drive flange seal using extractor lever ( VW681).
Removing grooved ball bearing
- Press grooved ball bearing out of mounting bracket.
Installing grooved ball bearing
- Press new grooved ball bearing into mounting bracket.
Installing sealing ring
- Coat outer edge and sealing lip of oil seal with gear oil.
- Drive in new sealing ring to stop, without canting.
• Installation position: The open side of the sealing ring faces the transmission.
- Fill area between sealing lip and dust lip halfway with sealing grease G 052 128 A1.
- Set drive gear for Speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) (G22) on drive flange (arrow).
• Installation position: The carriers at drive wheel must engage in grooves of drive flange
• If necessary, coat contact surface with grease to affix drive wheel in installation position.
- Press mounting bracket with grooved ball bearing onto drive flange.
- Insert circlip (arrow - A -).
Installing left drive flange
- Replace sealing ring (arrow B) in mounting bracket for drive flange.
- Check drive flange for sharp edges on transmission side of flange end (arrow) and if necessary, deburr.
- Insert left drive flange into transmission.
• When sliding in, left drive flange must be carefully guided by hand to prevent damage to the double sealing ring in transmission.
- Secure mounting bracket for drive flange.
- Bolt on harness connector bracket to mounting bracket for drive flange.
- Install speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) ( G22). Refer to => [ Speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor ] Speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor.
- Install left drive axle. Refer to - 1 -. => Steering and Suspension Steering and Suspension
- Install heat shield for left drive axle (arrows).
Third bolt is not visible in the illustration.
- Install left front wheel.
- Check oil level in front final drive. Refer to => [ Front Final Drive Gear Oil, Checking ] [1][2]Front Final Drive Gear Oil, Checking.
