Selector Mechanism






Selector Mechanism

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A)

Removing

- Remove shift knob with cover. Refer to => [ Shift Knob with Cover ] Shift Knob With Cover.

Vehicles with large radio slot

- Remove A/C controls.

Vehicles with small radio slot

- Raise cover - 1 - first in direction of - arrow A - and pull this out in direction of - arrow B -.





All:

- Remove bolts - arrow C - and then remove ashtray - 2 - from center console.

- Disconnect ashtray lighting electrical connector.

- Remove foam wedges from center console.

- Remove noise insulation upward.

- Remove shifter housing noise insulation - arrows -.





- Remove nuts - arrows -.





- Loosen screws or quick-release connectors - 1 - and - 2 - and remove front noise insulation - A -.





- If equipped, loosen quick-release connectors - 3 - and remove rear noise insulation - B -.

Flex joint in front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10°, otherwise it may be damaged.





- Disconnect exhaust system at clamping sleeve(s) - arrows -.

- If necessary, disengage rear part of exhaust system at retaining loops and remove.

To remove the rear section of the exhaust system, a second technician will be required.

- Remove driveshaft heat shield - arrows -.





- Remove exhaust system heat shield - 1 - below shift mechanism - arrows -.





- Remove bolts at transmission/driveshaft flange.

- Press driveshaft - 2 - together with rear final drive. CV joints can be moved axially.

- Tie driveshaft - 1 - and heat shield up to side - arrow -.





- Place plunger of Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A) with a block of wood inserted between - 1 - on lower crossmember.





- Support lower crossmember using Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A).

- First remove bolts - 1 - and - 2 -, then bolts - 3 - and - 4 -.

- Slowly lower bottom crossmember with Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A) until distance from lower crossmember to body is "x".





Dimension x = 60 mm

- If equipped, remove left and right CV joint heat shield - arrow -.





- Remove selector rod connecting rod - 2 -.





- Remove push rod - 1 - by unbolting socket head hex bolt.

- Remove nut - 1 - and pull transmission shift lever - 2 - from selector shaft of transmission.





- Pivot selector housing with selector rod and push rod downward and remove

Installing

Install in reverse sequence; note the following points:

Seals and self-locking nuts must be replaced.

- Mount the transmission shift lever - 2 - and tighten nut - 1 -. Tightening specification => [ (Item 6) Nut - 20 Nm ] Selector Rod, Connecting Rod and Push Rod Assembly Overview.

- Tighten push rod - 1 -. Tightening specification => [ (Item 10) Bolt, 40 Nm ] Selector Rod, Connecting Rod and Push Rod Assembly Overview.





- Tighten connecting rod - 2 -. Tightening specification => [ (Item 7) Bolt, 20 Nm ] Selector Rod, Connecting Rod and Push Rod Assembly Overview.

- Install tunnel crossmember. Refer to => [ Transmission Mount and Tunnel Crossmember Assembly Overview ] Transmission Mount and Tunnel Crossmember Assembly Overview

- Fasten driveshaft to transmission.

- Reconnect exhaust system and ensure it is not under stress.

- If equipped, install rear noise insulation.

- Mount selector housing - arrows -. Tightening specification => [ (Item 18) Nut - 8 Nm ] Shift Lever and Shift Lever Bracket Assembly Overview





- Adjust selector mechanism. Refer to => [ Shift Mechanism, Adjusting ] Shift Mechanism, Adjusting.

- Remove shift housing noise insulation - arrows -. Tightening specification => [ (Item 13) Nut - 8 Nm ] Shift Lever and Shift Lever Bracket Assembly Overview





- Install air conditioning operating unit.
