Gear Oil in Transfer Case, Changing or Filling After Repair

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Oil Collecting and Extracting Device (V.A.G 1782 )

• Protective glasses

Drain gear oil

• General repair notes. Refer to => [ Repair Information ] Repair Information.

• Observe cleanliness rules when working on automatic transmissions. Refer to => [ Cleanliness Working Conditions ] Cleanliness Working Conditions.

- Place Used Oil Collection and Extraction Device ( V.A.G 1782) under transmission.

CAUTION!
Wear protective glasses.

- Remove oil drain plug - arrow A - and drain gear oil.





• Oil drain plug with sealing ring must be replaced.

- Tighten new drain plug.

• There are 2 scenarios when filling the gear oil:

• A - the transfer case was not removed.

• B - the transfer case was removed.

A - the transfer case was not removed.

• If the oil filler hole sealing plug is not accessible enough, loosen or remove corresponding parts of the exhaust system.

- Remove oil filler hole sealing plug - arrow B -.





- Fill gear oil up to lower edge of oil filler hole. Specification and quantity. Refer to => [ ATF Level In Planetary Gearing, Checking and Correcting ] ATF Level In Planetary Gearing, Checking and Correcting.

- Install old sealing plug.

• If the exhaust system needs to be loosened or removed, make sure it is re-installed and tight for the road test and for the next time the oil level is checked.

- Perform a 15 minute road test.

• During the road test, the gear oil enters the output sleeve and the center differential; the oil level in the transfer case housing lowers.

- Fill gear oil in transfer case. Refer to => [ Gear Oil Level in Transfer Case, Checking and Correcting ] Gear Oil Level in Transfer Case, Checking and Correcting.

B - the transfer case was removed and disassembled

- Fill 200 ml gear oil in output sleeve.

- For assembling and installing the transfer case. Refer to => Transmission and Drivetrain Transmission and Drivetrain

- Remove oil filler hole sealing plug - arrow B -.





- Fill 600 ml gear oil in transfer case housing.

• Sealing plug with sealing ring must be replaced.

- Install new oil filler hole sealing plug.

• It is not necessary to check the oil level again at this stage.
