Center Differential Gear Oil, Changing or Filling

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Drip tray (VAG1306)

Procedure

- Drive vehicle onto a 4-column lift or over a work pit.

• The vehicle must be on a level surface.

Drain gear oil

- Place drip tray (VAG1306) underneath.

- Removing drain plug (arrow A) and draining gear oil.





- Always replace drain plug.

- Thread in new drain plug (arrow A) again and tighten to 20 Nm.

Filling up gear oil

- If necessary, loosen or remove relevant parts of the exhaust system to gain access to oil filler plug - arrow B -.





• There is a distinction made between two cases:

• A - Center differential was not removed.

• B - Center differential was removed

A - Center differential was not removed (e.g. after removing and installing drive flange/drive shaft)

- Remove oil filler plug - arrow B -.





- Top up transmission fluid to lower edge of oil filler hole. Specification and capacity => [ Center differential ] 01VA Transmission.

- Thread in old oil filler plug and tighten to 35 Nm.

• If it was necessary to loosen or remove the exhaust system, this must be re-secured or reinstalled for the road test. It must be removed and installed again for the final oil level check.

- Road test vehicle (15 minutes pure driving).

• During road test, gear oil enters output cover and Torsen differential; oil level in center differential housing will drop.

- Fill transfer housing with gear oil and check oil level. Refer to => [ Center Differential Gear Oil, Checking and Filling ] Center Differential Gear Oil, Checking and Filling.

B - Center differential was removed and disassembled

- Add 200 ml. gear oil to output cover.

- Center differential, assembling and installing. Refer to => [ Center Differential ] Final Drive, Differential (01VA Transmission).

- Remove oil filler plug (arrow B).





- Add 600 ml. gear oil to center differential housing.

- Always replace oil filler plug.

- Thread in new oil filler plug and tighten to 35 Nm.

• Oil level does not need to be re-checked.

All:

- Secure or re-install exhaust system free of stress.
