Interrogating DTC Memory
NOTE:
- Only an outline of "Interrogating DTC memory" function is given. When interrogating DTC memory by way of "Guided Fault-Finding" function, appropriate information is given on determining malfunction location and rectification "Guided Fault-Finding" function of Diagnostic Operation System VAS 5051.
- In addition to DTC display, certain general and ambient conditions under which malfunction occurred are stored in control module (e.g. mileage, time, date, engine temperature, battery voltage and engine speed). These items of information are particularly useful for establishing sporadic DTCs "Guided Fault-Finding" function of Diagnostic Operation System VAS 5051.
- DTC table for malfunction locations and types of DTCs relating to air conditioner is contained in Guided Fault-Finding routine "Guided Fault-Finding" function of Diagnostic Operation System VAS 5051.
- With ignition off, connect the Diagnostic Operation System VAS 5051A with Diagnostic Cable - 3 meter VAS 5051/5A to 16-pin diagnostic socket in vehicle and use address word "08" or "28" to select air conditioner/heater electronics or "rear AC operating element".

- Select function "02 - Interrogating DTC memory".
Indicated on display of Diagnostic Operation System VAS 5051A:
- Number of stored DTCs appears in display zone - 1 - .
- DTC , malfunction location and type stored appear in display zone - 2 - .
NOTE:
- Touch key to return to selection program.
- Touch key for display of general and ambient conditions under which malfunction(s) occurred.
- Proceed as follows if no malfunction has been detected but there are problems with air conditioner (e.g. constant or intermittent failure of cooling output, inadequate system regulation, no control of fresh air blower speed):
1. Read measured value block (function 08).
2. Perform final control diagnosis (function 03).
3. Check coding of Climatronic Control Module J255 (function 07).
4. Check adaptation of Climatronic Control Module J255 (and Rear A/C Control Head (Climatronic) E265) (function 10).
5. Check cooling/heat output of air conditioner. Checking Cooling Output of Air Conditioner
- If malfunction(s) are found:
1. Rectify malfunction(s).
2. Check DTC memory (function 02).
3. Erase DTC memory (function 05).
4. Check coding of Climatronic Control Module J255 (function 07).
5. Perform basic setting (function 04).
6. Check adaptation of Climatronic Control Module J255 (and Rear A/C Control Head (Climatronic) E265) (function 10).
7. Check DTC memory (function 02) and if necessary eliminate malfunction(s) displayed, erase DTC memory (function 05) and repeat procedure.
8. End output (function 06).
- Certain DTCs can only be erased after starting engine (e.g. "ignition off time signal" following replacement of Instrument Cluster Control Module J285). If a DTC cannot be erased, start engine and leave it running for 1 minute before interrogating and erasing DTC memory again.
