Selector Lever Cable

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Pry Lever - RMV Outside Mirror (80 - 200)

Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A)

Removing

- Move the selector lever into D.

- Turn off the ignition.

- Remove the supply hose on both sides between the air filter and the throttle body.

- Remove the handle on the selector lever. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Handle ] Selector Lever Handle.

- Remove front ashtray.

- Remove center console cover panel.

- Disconnect the connector - 1 - from the protective cover - 2 -.





- Disconnect the electrical connector - 1 - from the circuit board.

- Disconnect the electrical connector - 3 - for the shift lock solenoid.

- To disconnect cover from shift mechanism function unit, carefully release retaining tabs - arrows - one after another.





- Pull cover slightly upward until cover guides - 1 - are outside of openings - 2 -.

- Then swivel the rear of the cover towards the top, in the direction of the - arrow -, while simultaneously pulling it over the cross brace of the center console - 3 -.

- Lift the vehicle.





- Remove the crossmember - A - under the exhaust system.

- Disconnect the front exhaust pipe and catalytic converter from the rear exhaust system and tie it up.

- Remove the lower shield - B -.

- Remove the air duct - 1 - from the transmission.





- Remove the sound proofing - 2 - from underneath the transmission.

- Remove the driveshaft heat shield - 3 -.

- Disconnect driveshaft - 4 - from transmission and tie up.

- Remove the heat shield - 5 - over the driveshaft and slide it to the rear.

Lower the back of the transmission:


For the following steps, note:

Do not support on the transmission oil pan or damage could result.

- Install an M12 x 100 bolt - 1 - with a nut - 2 - into the rear mount on the transmission fluid pan.





- a - = 13 mm

- Position (V.A.G 1383 A) plunger on bolt head and slightly raise transmission, as shown in illustration.

- Remove the sound proofing bracket from underneath the ATF cooler.

- Mark the installed position of the transmission tunnel crossmember on the body.





- Remove the left - 1 - and right - 2 - transmission bolts on tunnel crossmember.

- Remove the transmission tunnel crossmember from the body - arrows -.






To prevent damage from occurring, it is very important to pay attention to everything in the engine compartment.

- Carefully lower rear of engine and transmission with (V.A.G 1383 A).

- The forward exhaust pipe must not rest on the subframe.

- Remove shield from lever/selector shaft.





- Remove the selector lever cable ball socket - 1 - from the selector shaft lever - 3 - using the (80 - 200)

- Unclip lock washer - 2 - on the shift select lever cable bracket and remove shift select lever cable.

- Guide the selector lever cable - 1 - between body - arrows - and transmission tunnel crossmember - 2 -.





- Secure transmission tunnel crossmember to body again so that (V.A.G 1383 A) can be removed from beneath transmission for the following steps.

- Lever the locking washers - arrows - for the sound proofing - 2 - from the cover of the transmission shift activator.





- If present, remove the fastening bolts for the sound proofing.

- Bring out the sound proofing - 2 - over the shift selector cable - 1 -.

- Lower the vehicle.

- Pry manual release Bowden cable - 1 - out of the bracket - 2 -.





- Loosen the nuts - 3 - about one turn.

- Remove the bolts - 4 -.

- Carefully pull shift mechanism function unit up and out of shift unit.

- At the same time, guide the manual release actuator mechanism - A - and the selector lever cable - B - out of the cover.





If necessary, unclip the selector lever cable sleeve from the cover.

- Loosen the selector lever cable locking screw - arrow - with a 25 mm Torx(R) socket.

- Remove the securing plate - C - for the selector lever cable from the shift mechanism function unit.

- Remove the shift mechanism function unit. Remove the selector lever cable at the same time without bending it.

- Lift the vehicle.

- Remove selector lever cable downward out of the cover.

Installing

Installation is in the reverse order of removal. Pay attention to the following:

Tightening specifications for bolts and nuts, and whether bolts and nuts are to be replaced. Refer to => [ Selector Mechanism Function Unit, Manual Release Overview ] Selector Mechanism Function Unit, Manual Release Overview.

Shift selector lever and selector shaft lever are in position D.

- Insert selector lever cable with rubber sleeve into shift mechanism shift cover from below.

- Lower the vehicle.

- Guide the shift selector lever cable - B - into shift mechanism function unit and in the hole for the selector lever cable locking bolt - arrow -.





- Install the selector lever cable to the shift mechanism function unit securing plate - C -.

Installed position: The angled end of the securing plate faces up.

- Carefully guide shift mechanism function unit into shift mechanism shift unit, noting manual release operating mechanism - A -.

The Bowden cable must be routed under the right mounting bracket - D -.

- Guide the cover over the shift selector - 4 - and simultaneously to the front area under the cross brace for the center console - 3 -.





- Then swivel the cover downward and to the rear - arrow direction -.

- Insert cover guides - 1 - into openings - 2 -.

- Then press the cover until the retaining tabs - arrow - clip in.

- Lift the vehicle.

- Check that the sleeve for the shift selector cable is inserted into the transmission shift actuator cover.

- Bring out the sound proofing - 2 - over the shift selector cable - 1 - on the cover of the transmission shift activator.





- Install new lock washers - arrows -.

- If present, install the fastening screws for the sound proofing with 2 Nm.

- Route the selector lever cable - 1 - above securing points - arrows - for tunnel crossmember - 2 -.





- Do not bend the selector lever cable.

- Insert the shift selector cable - 1 - into the bracket/transmission and carefully press down on the lever/selector shaft. Do not bend the selector shaft lever when doing this, otherwise shifting can no longer be adjusted precisely.

- Raise engine and transmission from the rear, so as not to catch the selector lever cable.

When installing tunnel crossmember on body, observe installation position (markings from removal).

- Install tunnel crossmember. Refer to => [ Tunnel Crossmember ] Tunnel Crossmember.

- Attach the driveshaft to the transmission flange.

- Connect front exhaust pipes to rear exhaust system.

- Adjust the selector lever cable. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable, Checking and Adjusting ] Procedures.

- Install ashtray and center console cover panel.

- Connect the battery ground (GND) cable.
