Shift Mechanism and Selector Lever Cable

If repair work only needs to be done on the shift mechanism function unit, it can be removed and installed separately. Refer to => [ Selector Mechanism Function Unit ] Selector Mechanism Function Unit.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Pry Lever - RMV Outside Mirror (80 - 200)

Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A)

Removing

- Move the selector lever into D.

- With the ignition switched off, disconnect the battery ground (GND) cable.

- Remove the handle on the selector lever. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Handle ] Selector Lever Handle.

- Remove front ashtray.

- Remove center console cover panel.

- Disconnect the connector - 1 - from the protective cover - 2 -.





- Disconnect the electrical connector - 1 - from the circuit board.

- Disconnect the electrical connector - 3 - for the shift lock solenoid.

The electrical connector - 3 - also has a protective cover.

- To disconnect cover from shift mechanism function unit, carefully release retaining tabs - arrows - one after another.





- Pull cover upward slightly until cover guides - 1 - are outside of openings - 2 - on shift mechanism function unit.

- Then swivel the rear of the cover towards the top, in the direction of the - arrow -, while simultaneously pulling it over the cross brace of the center console - 3 -.

- Remove the nuts - arrow -.





- Remove the bracket - A - from the studs for activation of the manual release.

- Press the 4 brackets - B - for the shift mechanism function unit and secure it, for example with wire.

- Lift the vehicle.





- Remove the crossmember - A - under the exhaust system.

- Disconnect the front exhaust pipe and catalytic converter from the rear exhaust system and tie it up.

- Remove the lower shield - B -.

- Remove the air duct - 1 - from the transmission.





- Remove the sound proofing - 2 - from underneath the transmission.

- Remove the driveshaft heat shield - 3 -.

- Disconnect driveshaft - 4 - from transmission and tie up.

- Remove the heat shield - 5 - over the driveshaft and slide it to the rear.

Lower the back of the transmission:


For the following steps, note:

Do not support on the transmission oil pan or damage could result.

- Install an M12 x 100 bolt - 1 - with a nut - 2 - into the rear mount on the transmission fluid pan.





- a - = 13 mm

- Position engine/transmission holder (V.A.G 1383 A) plunger on bolt head and slightly raise transmission, as shown in illustration.

- Remove the sound proofing bracket from underneath the ATF cooler.

- Mark the installed position of the transmission tunnel crossmember on the body.





- Remove the left - 1 - and right - 2 - transmission bolts on tunnel crossmember.

- Remove the transmission tunnel crossmember from the body - arrows -.






To prevent damage from occurring, it is very important to pay attention to everything in the engine compartment.

- Carefully lower rear of engine and transmission with engine/transmission jack (V.A.G 1383 A).

- The forward exhaust pipe must not rest on the subframe.

- Remove shield from lever/selector shaft.





- Remove the selector lever cable ball socket - 1 - from the selector shaft lever - 3 - using the pry lever (80 - 200)

- Unclip lock washer - 2 - on the shift select lever cable bracket and remove shift select lever cable.

- Lever the locking washers - arrows - for the sound proofing - 2 - from the cover of the transmission shift activator.





- If present, remove the fastening screws for the sound proofing.

- Bring out the sound proofing - 2 - over the shift selector cable - 1 -.

- Remove the selector mechanism and shift selector cable downward.

Installing

Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. Pay attention to the following:

Tightening specifications for bolts and nuts, and whether bolts and nuts are to be replaced, refer to => [ Selector Mechanism Function Unit, Manual Release Overview ] Selector Mechanism Function Unit, Manual Release Overview.

Shift selector lever and selector shaft lever are in position "D".

- Lift the vehicle.

- Install the shift mechanism function unit on body.

When inserting, the 4 braces serve as protection to prevent the shift mechanism function unit from falling out.

If one or more braces break off, remove them. The shift mechanism function unit does not have to be replaced because of this.

- Bring out the sound proofing - 2 - over the shift selector cable - 1 - on the cover of the transmission shift activator.





- Install new lock washers - arrows -.

- If present, install the fastening screws for the sound proofing with 2 Nm.

- Route the selector lever cable - 1 - above securing points - arrows - for tunnel crossmember - 2 -.





Do not bend the selector lever cable.

- Insert the shift selector cable - 1 -into the bracket/transmission and carefully press down on the lever/selector shaft- 3 -. Do not bend the selector shaft lever when doing this, otherwise shifting can no longer be adjusted precisely.





- Press open the new locking plate - 2 - on the bracket/transmission of the shift selector cable.

Installed position: The angled end of the locking clip must point toward the end of the selector lever cable.

- Install shield on lever/selector shaft.

- Raise engine and transmission from the rear, so as not to catch the selector lever cable.

When installing tunnel crossmember on body, observe installation position (markings from removal).

- Install tunnel crossmember => [ Tunnel Crossmember ] Tunnel Crossmember.

- Attach the driveshaft to the transmission flange.

- Connect front exhaust pipes to rear exhaust system.

- Install the bracket - A - for activation of the manual released on the studs.





- Tighten the nuts - arrows -.

- Guide the cover over the shift selector - 4 - and simultaneously to the front area under the cross brace for the center console - 3 -.





- Then swivel the cover downward and to the rear - arrow direction -.

- Insert cover guides - 1 - into openings - 2 -.

- Then press the cover until the retaining tabs - arrow - clip in.

- Disconnect the electrical connector - 3 - for the shift lock solenoid (N110).





- Slide the electrical connector - 3 - into the protective cover (not shown here).

- Connect the electrical connector - 1 - to the circuit board.

- Slide the electrical connector - 1 - into the protective cover - 2 -.

- Adjust the selector lever cable. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable, Checking and Adjusting ] Procedures.

- Install ashtray and center console trim.

- Install the handle on the selector lever. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Handle ] Selector Lever Handle.

- Connect ground strap to battery.

- Selector Mechanism, Checking, refer to => [ Selector Mechanism, Checking ] Procedures.
