Torque Converter

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Extractor (T40176)

• Depth gauge

• Automatic transmission clean working conditions, refer to => [ Clean Working Conditions ] Clean Working Conditions.

• General repair instructions, refer to => [ General Repair Information ] General Repair Information.

• Lightly coat shaft seals with ATF. Other types of lubrication lead to faults in the transmission hydraulics.

Removing

• Transmission removed.

- Secure the transmission on the assembly stand. Refer to => [ Transmission, Securing to Assembly Stand ] Transmission, Securing to Assembly Stand.

- Remove the left flange shaft. Refer to => [ Left Flange Shaft ] Left Flange Shaft.

- Remove the - nut - from the (T40176).





- Install the (T40176) with the extension (T40176/1) in a threaded opening on the torque converter and tighten by hand.

- Remove the torque converter carefully without tilting it.

Installing

Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:

- Always clean the torque converter bell housing in the area where the differential is accessed - arrow A - and the shaft seal - arrow B -.





• Replace the shaft seal between the differential and transmission housing - arrow B - if it is damaged. Refer to => [ Final Drive/Transmission Housing Shaft Seal ] Final Drive/Transmission Housing Shaft Seal.

- Fill the space between the sealing and dust lip half way with sealing grease (G 052 128 A1).

- Clean torque converter hub and shaft seal.

- Check the torque converter shaft seal and replace if damaged. Refer to => [ Torque Converter Shaft Seal ] 09EA Transmission.

- Lightly coat shaft seals with ATF.

- Press torque converter hub through shaft seal as far as first stop.

- Lightly press torque converter inwards and turn until slots on torque converter hub engage in drive lugs on ATF pump gear and torque converter slides in a noticeable distance.

Installation Dimension

If the converter is installed correctly, the space - a - between the surface of the securing eyes and the surface of the converter bell housing will be:





• With 10-cylinder gasoline engines: at least 18.9 mm minimum. 18.9 mm.

• With 8-cylinder and 12-cylinder gasoline engines: minimum. 5.9 mm.

- Remove the (T40176) with the (T40176/1) from the torque converter.

- Left flange shaft, installing, refer to => [ Left Flange Shaft ] Left Flange Shaft

- Always use new original bolts to secure torque converter to drive plate when installing transmission.
