Left and Right Timing Chain Covers
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Hand drill with plastic brush attachment
• Protective eyewear
• Sealant
Removing
• During installation, all cable ties must be re-installed at the same location.
- Pull rear engine cover off - arrows -.
- Drain coolant. Refer to => [ Cooling System, Draining and Filling ] Procedures.
- Remove left coolant pipe. Refer to => [ Left Coolant Pipe ] Left Coolant Pipe.
- Remove right coolant pipe. Refer to => [ Right Coolant Pipe ] Right Coolant Pipe.
- Remove oxygen sensors.
- Remove secondary air injection combination valve. Refer to: Left => [ Secondary Air Injection Left Combination Valve ] Secondary Air Injection Left Combination Valve, right => [ Secondary Air Injection Right Combination Valve ] Secondary Air Injection Right Combination Valve.
- Remove rear coolant pipe. Refer to => [ Rear Coolant Pipe ] Rear Coolant Pipe.
- Remove bolts - 1 to 8 - and remove left timing chain cover.
- Remove bolts - 1 to 8 - and remove right timing chain cover.
Installing
• Tightening specifications => [ Left timing chain cover, tightening specifications and sequence ] Timing Chain Covers Assembly Overview, => [ Right timing chain cover, tightening specifications and sequence ] Timing Chain Covers Assembly Overview.
• Replace M6 bolts and O-rings.
• Secure all hose connections with hose clamps appropriate for the model.
• During installation, all cable ties must be re-installed at the same location.
CAUTION!
Risk of contaminating lubricating system.
• Cover open parts of engine.
CAUTION!
Risk of eye injury.
• Wear safety glasses.
- Remove sealant residue on timing chain covers and cylinder head, e.g. with a rotating plastic brush.
- Clean sealing surfaces so they are completely free of any oil or grease.
- Cut tube nozzle at front marking (nozzle dia. approximately 2 mm).
- Drive left coolant intermediate pipe - 2 - out of timing chain cover with a drift.
- Replace O-rings - 1 - at coolant intermediate pipe - 2 -.
- Insert coolant intermediate pipe in left timing chain cover.
CAUTION!
The lubrication system could be plugged with excess sealant.
• Do not apply sealant bead thicker than indicated.
- Apply sealant bead - arrows - on clean sealing surfaces of left timing chain cover, as shown in illustration.
• Thickness of sealant bead: 2.5 mm.
• Timing chain covers must be installed within 5 minutes after applying sealant.
- Position left timing chain cover and tighten bolts => [ Left timing chain cover, tightening specifications
and sequence ] Timing Chain Covers Assembly Overview
- Drive right coolant intermediate pipe - 2 - out of right timing chain cover with a drift.
- Replace O-rings - 1 - at coolant intermediate pipe - 2 -.
- Insert coolant intermediate pipe in right timing chain cover.
CAUTION!
The lubrication system could be plugged with excess sealant.
• Do not apply sealant bead thicker than indicated.
- Apply sealant bead - arrows - on clean sealing surfaces of right timing chain cover, as shown in illustration.
• Thickness of sealant bead: 2.5 mm.
- Position right timing chain cover and tighten bolts => [ Right timing chain cover, tightening specifications
and sequence ] Timing Chain Covers Assembly Overview
The rest of the installation is in reverse order of removal, note the following:
- Install rear coolant pipe. Refer to => [ Rear Coolant Pipe ] Rear Coolant Pipe.
- Install secondary air injection combination valve. Refer to: Left => [ Secondary Air Injection Left Combination Valve ] Secondary Air Injection Left Combination Valve, right => [ Secondary Air Injection Right Combination Valve ] Secondary Air Injection Right Combination Valve.
- Install oxygen sensors (G39) and (G108).
- Install left coolant pipe. Refer to => [ Left Coolant Pipe ] Left Coolant Pipe.
- Install right coolant pipe. Refer to => [ Right Coolant Pipe ] Right Coolant Pipe.
- Fill with coolant => [ Filling ] Procedures.
