Timing Chain Covers






Timing Chain Covers

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Adhesive compound

Hand drill with plastic brush attachment

Protective eyewear

CAUTION!
When upper right camshaft timing chain cover is removed, the engine must not be turned over. Only when the chain tensioner for right camshaft timing chain and upper right timing chain cover are installed, the timing chain is secured against jumping off.

Removing

Engine removed.

Engine separated from transmission.

During installation, re-install all heat insulation sleeves at the same locations.

All cable ties opened or cut during engine removal must be reinstalled at the same locations during installation.

- Remove drive plate => [ Drive Plate ] Drive Plate.

- Remove upper part of intake manifold => [ Intake Manifold Upper Section ] Cylinder Head, Valvetrain.

- Remove intake manifold lower part => [ Intake Manifold Lower-Section ] Intake Manifold Lower-Section.

- Remove cylinder head covers => [ Cylinder Head Cover ] Service and Repair.

- Remove heat insulation sleeve over Hall sensors for exhaust camshaft on both cylinder banks.





- Separate electrical connections on Hall sensors for exhaust camshaft - arrow - and intake camshaft on both cylinder banks.

- Separate electrical connection - 2 - at Map Controlled Engine Cooling Thermostat (F265).





- Remove Ground (GND) cable - 3 - on cylinder head.

- Remove harness clamp - 1 - and free up harness from upper coolant pipe.

- Remove bolts - 1 to 3 -.





- Disconnect coolant hoses at upper coolant pipe - arrows -.

- Remove upper coolant pipe.

- Disconnect coolant hoses - arrows - at upper left coolant pipe.





- Remove bolts - 1 - and - 2 - as well as nut - 3 -.

- Remove upper left coolant pipe.

- Disconnect electrical harness connector - 3 - at Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor (G62).





- Remove bolt - 4 - and remove guide tube - 1 - for wiring harness from engine.

- Pull pipe connections - 2 - off from cylinder block.

- Disconnect coolant hoses - arrows - at lower right coolant pipe.





- Remove bolts - 1 - and - 2 -.

- Pull lower right coolant pipe rearward and off from cylinder head.

- Remove bolts - 1 -.





- Pull middle right coolant pipe off from coolant hoses at the positions indicated by - arrows -.

- Remove bolts - 1 through 3 - and remove left timing chain cover.





- Remove chain tensioner for camshaft timing chain - arrow -.





- Remove bolts - 1 through 4 - and remove right timing chain cover.

- Remove bolts - 1 through 6 - and lower timing chain cover.





- Press crankshaft seal timing chain side out of lower timing chain cover.

- Pry out seals - 1 - for threaded studs using a screwdriver.





Installing

Installation is in reverse order of removal, notice the following:

Replace gaskets, seals and O-rings.

During installation, protective heat boots must be re-installed at the same location.

During installation, all cable ties must be re-installed at the same location.

- Using e.g. a rotating plastic brush, remove sealant residue on covers for timing chain and on cylinder block and head.





CAUTION!
Wear safety glasses.

- Clean sealing surfaces, they must be free of oil and grease.

Covers for timing chain must be installed within 15 minutes after applying sealant.

- Cut tube nozzle at front marking (nozzle dia. approximately 2 mm).





- Apply sealant beads - arrows - on clean sealing surfaces of lower timing chain cover, as shown in illustration.





Thickness of sealant bead: 1.5 to 2.0 mm.

- Position lower timing chain cover and tighten bolts - 1 to 6 - in a diagonal sequence.





- Apply a thin bead of sealant to the edges between the lower cover and the left and right covers for timing chain - arrows -.





- Apply a sealant bead - arrow - on the clean sealing surfaces of lower left and right timing chain covers, as shown in illustration.





Thickness of sealant bead: 1.5 to 2.0 mm.

- Place O-ring - 1 - into the right timing chain cover.

- Set left timing chain cover in place and fasten bolts as follows:





1. Tighten bolts - 1 - and - 3 - to 5 Nm.

2. Tighten bolt - 2 - to 10 Nm.

3. Tighten bolts - 1 - and - 3 - to 10 Nm.

- Set right timing chain cover in place and fasten bolts as follows:





1. Tighten bolts - 2 -, - 3 - and - 4 - to 5 Nm.

2. Tighten bolt - 1 - to 10 Nm.

3. Tighten bolts - 2 -, - 3 - and - 4 - to 10 Nm.

- Fasten chain tensioner for camshaft timing chain - arrow - with a new seal.

- Install crankshaft seal, timing chain side => [ Crankshaft Seal, Timing Chain Side, Replacing ] Service and Repair.

- Install seals for threaded studs => [ Seals for Threaded Studs, Replacing ] Service and Repair.

- Install middle right coolant pipe => [ Installing ] Middle Right Coolant Pipe.

- Install lower right coolant pipe => [ ] Lower Right Coolant Pipe.

- Install upper left coolant pipe => [ Upper Left Coolant Pipe ] Upper Left Coolant Pipe.

- Install upper coolant pipe => [ Installing ] Upper Coolant Pipe.

- Install cylinder head covers => [ Installing ] Service and Repair.

CAUTION!
Observe the correct routing of electrical harnesses on the engine => [ Routing of Wiring on Engine ] Routing of Wiring on Engine.

- Install intake manifold lower-part => [ Intake Manifold Lower-Section ] Intake Manifold Lower-Section.

- Install intake manifold upper-part => [ Intake Manifold Upper Section ] Cylinder Head, Valvetrain.

- Install drive plate => [ Drive Plate ] Drive Plate.
