Camshaft Timing Chains
Camshaft Timing Chains
Removing
• Engine and transmission separated, refer to => [ Engine and Transmission, Separating ] Engine and Transmission, Separating, engine on the scissor lift platform (VAS 6131 A) or secured by the engine/transmission holder, refer to => [ Engine, Securing to Engine and Transmission Holder ] Engine, Securing to Engine and Transmission Holder.
• Engine oil drained.
- Remove the drive plate. Refer to => [ Drive Plate ] Drive Plate.
- Remove the cylinder head cover, refer to => [ Left Cylinder Head Cover ] Left Cylinder Head Cover, refer to => [ Right Cylinder Head Cover ] Right Cylinder Head Cover.
- Remove left and right timing chain covers. Refer to => [ Left and Right Timing Chain Covers ] Left and Right Timing Chain Covers.
- Remove the intake manifold.
- Remove the oil filter housing. Refer to => [ Oil Filter Housing ] Oil Filter Housing.
- Remove lower timing chain cover. Refer to => [ Lower Timing Chain Cover ] Lower Timing Chain Cover.
- Remove camshaft timing chains from the camshafts. Refer to => [ Camshaft Timing Chain, Removing from Camshafts ] Camshaft Timing Chain, Removing From Camshafts.
CAUTION!
If the running direction is reversed on a used camshaft timing chain, it could be destroyed.
• Paint arrows to mark the timing chain running direction so it can be installed again. Do not mark the camshaft timing chain with a punch, notch or something similar.
- Remove the bolts - 1 - and - 2 - and then remove left chain tensioner and left camshaft timing chain.
- Remove the bolts - 1 - and - 2 - and then remove the right chain tensioner and the right camshaft timing chain.
Installing
• If the tensioner was removed from the chain tensioner, then pay close attention to the installed position: the hole in the bottom of the housing faces the chain tensioner and the piston faces the tensioning rail.
• Always replace bolts that are tightened to torque as well as the seal.
CAUTION!
Risk of damaging valves and piston crowns.
• If camshafts are rotated, crankshaft may not rest with any piston at TDC.
- Press left and right camshaft timing chain guide rail inward - arrow - as far as stop and secure chain tensioner with (T40071).
- Clean oil strainer - 2 - in both chain tensioners if necessary.
- Place a new gasket - 3 - onto the rear of the chain tensioner - 1 -.
- Insert chain tensioner in left cylinder head and position camshaft timing chain according to mark applied during removal, as shown in illustration.
- Tighten the bolts - 1 - and - 2 -.
- Install the chain tensioner in the right cylinder head and position camshaft timing chain according to mark applied during removal, as illustrated.
- Tighten the bolts - 1 - and - 2 -.
The rest of installation is in reverse order of removal, note the following:
- Mount the camshaft timing chains on the camshafts => [ Installing ] Camshaft Timing Chain, Removing From Camshafts.
- Install lower timing chain cover. Refer to => [ Lower Timing Chain Cover ] Lower Timing Chain Cover.
- Install the transmission-side crankshaft shaft seal. Refer to => [ Crankshaft Seal, Transmission Side ] Service and Repair.
- Install the oil filter housing. Refer to => [ Oil Filter Housing ] Oil Filter Housing.
- Install the intake manifold.
- Install left and right timing chain covers => [ Installing ] Left and Right Timing Chain Covers.
- Install the cylinder head cover. Refer to => [ Left Cylinder Head Cover ] Left Cylinder Head Cover, refer to => [ Right Cylinder Head Cover ] Right Cylinder Head Cover.
- Install drive plate. Refer to => [ Drive Plate ] Drive Plate.
- After installing the engine, fill with oil and then check the level.
