Engine and Automatic Transmission, Separating
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Bracket (30 - 211 A)
• Transmission Support (VAS 6131/14)
• Socket (T40058)
• Scissor-Type Assembly Platform (VAS 6131 A)
Prepare the Transmission Support (VAS 6131/14) :
- Shape the foam inserts to the dimension specifications.
• Dimension - a - = 20 mm.
• Dimension - b - = 55 mm
• Dimension - c - = 55 mm.
• Order two support pads (VAS 6131/14-1) for the (VAS 6131/14).
Procedure
• Engine/transmission assembly removed and placed on (VAS 6131 A).
- Rotate the left and right mounting element spindles on the subframe all the way down.
- Remove the mounting pins from the spindles.
• A second technician is required to remove subframe.
- Remove the subframe to the side.
- Remove both base plates of the subframe support elements from the (VAS 6131 A).
• Support points for front of engine, transmission and tunnel cross member remain unchanged.
- Equip the (VAS 6131 A) with the (VAS 6131/10) and the (VAS 6131/14) as follows:
- Attach mounting elements from the (VAS 6131/10) on the left side of the engine as illustrated.
- Attach mounting elements from the (VAS 6131/10) on the right side of the engine as illustrated.
- Rotate mounting element spindles upward until all mounting pins come in contact with the mounting points.
- Attach the mounting elements from the (VAS 6131/10) and (VAS 6131/14) at the front of the transmission as shown in the illustration.
- Rotate the left and right spindles up until the (VAS 6131/14) rests firmly against the transmission.
- Attach mounting element base plates to the (VAS 6131 A) and tighten to 20 Nm.
- Disconnect the electrical connector - 2 - for the Oxygen Sensor (O2S) 2 after Catalytic Converter (G131) and free up the electrical wire.
• In the illustration, the electrical connector is installed.
• Ignore - 1 -.
The decoupling elements in the front muffler could be damaged.
• Do not bend decoupling elements in front muffler more than 10°.
- Remove the bolts - 1 - on the rear bracket for the exhaust system.
• Ignore items - 2 and 3 -.
- Remove the nuts - 1, 2 and 3 - and then remove the left front exhaust pipe with the catalytic converter.
- Disconnect the electrical connector - 2 - for the oxygen sensor (O2S) after three way catalytic converter (TWC) (G130) and free up the electrical wire.
• In the illustration, the electrical connector is installed.
• Ignore - 1 -.
The decoupling elements in the front muffler could be damaged.
• Do not bend decoupling elements in front muffler more than 10°.
- Remove the bolts - 2 - on the rear bracket for the exhaust system.
• Ignore - 1 and 3 -.
- Remove the nuts - 1, 2 and 3 - and then remove the right front exhaust pipe with the catalytic converter.
- Remove the bolt - arrow - for the ATF pipe bracket on the oil pan.
- Disconnect electrical connector - arrow - on the engine speed (RPM) sensor (G28).
Risk of destroying transmission control module (Mechatronic) with static discharge.
• Do not touch contacts in transmission connector with hands.
- Touch the transmission housing (when not wearing gloves) to discharge the static electricity.
- Disconnect the left electrical connector on the transmission by rotating twist lock counter-clockwise - arrow -.
- Disconnect the electrical wires - 2 - and - 3 - from the starter.
- Remove the bolts - 1 - and - 4 - and remove the starter.
- Insert the (T40058) guide pins as follows:
• The large diameter - arrow 1 - faces the engine.
• Small diameter - arrow 2 - points to adapter.
- To loosen the torque converter bolts, counterhold the crankshaft using the (T40058).
• Only turn the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation - arrow -.
- Remove the 3 bolts - arrow - for the torque converter in the opening of the removed starter; to do so, turn the crankshaft 120°.
- Remove the remaining bolts - 3 through 10 - connecting the engine to the transmission.
• Ignore item - A -.
- Loosen clamping bolts - 1 - on sides of the (VAS 6131 A) and pull rear table plate with transmission toward the rear - arrow -.
- At the same time, push the torque converter through the opening off the drive plate.
- Secure torque converter in transmission against falling out with the (30 - 211 A).
