Seat Occupant Sensor: Service and Repair
Passenger Occupant Detection System
CAUTION!
Observe safety precautions when working on airbags, on side airbag, on passenger occupant detection system and for procedures on passenger occupant detection system to be performed after a crash => [ Airbag Safety Precautions ] Airbag Safety Precautions.
CAUTION!
The replacement part (service kit) for the passenger occupant detection system (for specific countries) is already precalibrated and must not be separated under any circumstances. The service kit consists of:
• Passenger Occupant Detection System Control Module -J706
• Passenger Occupant Detection System Pressure Sensor -G452
• Passenger Occupant Detection System Mat
• Seat cushion
• Wiring harness between the passenger occupant detection system control module -J706 and passenger occupant detection system pressure sensor -G452.
CAUTION!
The seat cover must also be replaced when replacing the service kit in the A8. The seat cover must be ordered separately.
• The passenger occupant detection system is only installed on the front passenger seat.
CAUTION!
Since the straps - 4 - of the mat for passenger occupant detection system - 6 - are installed beneath the transverse beam - 5 - of the seat pan - 1 - when in the original vehicle delivery state, the passenger occupant detection system cannot be removed without destroying it.
For already installed service kits, the straps - 4 - of mat for passenger occupant detection system - 6 - are routed over the transverse beam - 5 - of seat pan - 1 -. Therefore the service kits can be removed without destroying them.
Removing passenger occupant detection system:
- Remove the passenger seat => [ Seat ] Power Memory Front Seats.
• Before disconnecting electrical connectors - 3 - to - 5 - and removing seat from vehicle, set the seat into the following positions to perform work on the passenger occupant detection system.
- Move the seat to the center position (in the forward/back direction).
- Tilt seat all the way up.
- Set the seat depth adjustment as far forward as possible.
• To remove the airbag, battery must be disconnected with the ignition switched on.
- Switch on ignition.
- Disconnect the battery ground (GND) strap.
- Mount the fixture for seat repair (VAS 6136) on the engine and transmission holder (VAS 6095).
- Attach the front seat to the fixture for seat repair (VAS 6136).
- Remove the backrest => [ Front Backrest ] Power Memory Front Seats.
- Disconnect harness connector - 1 - between service kit and seat cable harness.
- Remove bolts - 1 - (Qty. 3).
- Remove hex nuts - 2 - (Qty. 2).
- Remove clip - 3 -.
- Carefully pull retaining plate - 4 - in direction of arrow and carefully lift retaining plate. "Retaining plate must not be warped" Guide the passenger occupant detection system control module (J706) - 5 - through the narrow opening, following the cable routing.
• In the original vehicle delivery state, the cable is routed beneath bracket - 6 -. In the illustration, the cable routing of the service kit for passenger occupant detection system is depicted (cable routing over bracket - 6 -).
CAUTION!
If it is not possible to pass passenger occupant detection system control module (J706) through the narrow opening, disconnect the connector on the control module - 5 - and remove the control module. Only perform this step if it pertains to the passenger occupant detection system as delivered from the factory. (In the original vehicle delivery state, passenger occupant detection systems cannot be removed without destroying them.)
- Remove the connector - 1 - on the passenger occupant detection system pressure sensor (G452) from the retainer - 2 -.
CAUTION!
Harness connector - 1 - must not be disconnected.
- Unclip pressure hose - 1 - from bracket - 3 -.
- Remove cover upholstery => [ Seat Pan Cushion and Upholstery, Separating from Seat Pan ] Front Seat Cushion and Upholstery, Power Memory Seats. Separate cover from seat upholstery => [ Seat Pan Cushion, Separating from Upholstery ] Front Seat Cushion and Upholstery, Power Memory Seats.
• Seat upholstery - 2 - remains joined to the mat for passenger occupant detection system - 6 - because the clips - 7 - (Qty. 2) cannot be loosened.
CAUTION!
Clips - 7 - (Qty. 2) must not be removed.
- Fold back the seat upholstery - 2 -.
- Remove anti-crush fleece.
- Remove clips - 3 - (Qty. 3). Damaged clips must be replaced.
• 2 hard foam inserts are bonded on to seat pan - 1 - beneath the mat - 6 - for passenger occupant detection system. The hard foam inserts are required for the system to function correctly. Hard foam inserts do not come supplied with the service kit delivery casing. Replace the hard foam inserts if damaged => [ Hard Foam Inserts ] Hard Foam Inserts.
- Pull out passenger occupant detection system control module (J706) through hole in seat pan - 1 - (beneath mat for passenger occupant detection system - 6 -).
- If the straps - 4 - (Qty. 2) on mat for passenger occupant detection system - 6 - are routed beneath the transverse beam - 5 -, cut through the straps - 4 - (Qty. 2) as depicted in the illustration.
CAUTION!
If the straps - 4 - are routed above transverse beam - 5 -, a service kit has already been installed. Then the straps - 4 - must not be cut.
CAUTION!
Pressure hose and mat for passenger occupant detection system - 6 - must not be bent under any circumstances.
Installing service kit for passenger occupant detection system:
CAUTION!
Observe safety precautions when working on airbags, on side airbag, on passenger occupant detection system and for procedures on passenger occupant detection system to be performed after a crash => [ Airbag Safety Precautions ] Airbag Safety Precautions.
- Installation is reverse of removal. Note the following when doing this.
- Replace damaged components.
- Straps - 4 - (Qty. 2) on mat for passenger occupant detection system - 6 - must be routed above the transverse beam - 5 -.
- The protective padding must be positioned without wrinkles between the passenger occupant detection system mat - 6 - and the seat foam - 2 -.
- Position the pressure hose - 1 - according to marking - 2 - in retainer - 3 -.
- Route the wire from passenger occupant detection system control module (J706) - 5 - as depicted.
• In the original vehicle delivery state, the cable is routed beneath bracket - 6 -.
- Tighten bolts - 1 - and hex nuts - 2 - to Tightening torque:.
- When upholstering the seat pan, all cover clips must be engaged or installed in the previous locations:
CAUTION!
No one should be in vehicle when connecting battery.
- Connect battery ground strap.
When installing a new service kit and after each repair on front passenger's seat during which the seat and/or the backrest cover is disengaged, a basic setting as well as a RE-ZERO procedure must be performed on the passenger occupant detection system control module => [ Additional Passenger Occupant
Detection Sensor Safety Precautions ] Airbag Safety Precautions.
- To complete, select the "Airbag" function in "Guided Fault Finding" using.
• -J706 Passenger occupant detection system control module basic setting
