Front Suspension

Air Spring Damper

Air spring damper, removing and installing. Refer to => [ Air Spring Damper ] Air Spring Damper.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque wrench (VAG 1410)

CV joint boot clamp tool (VAG 1682)

Servicing the air spring damper for the time being only involves replacing the boot and cleaning the piston.

1 Air Spring Damper

If the left front dampening adjustment valve (N336) or right front dampening adjustment valve (N337) is faulty, the entire air spring damper must be replaced.

2 Threaded Connection

do not open.

3 Clamp

Always replace.

4 Residual Pressure Retaining Valve

Do not loosen or the air spring damper will be damaged.

5 Boot

Must not have any pressure points. Correct them if necessary. Refer to => [ Air Spring Damper Boot, Correcting Pressure Points ] Front Suspension.

Installed position:

Slide up onto the air spring damper as far as the end of the ribs.

The bottom must engage in the retaining ring - item 8 -.

6 Rubber Boot

7 Piston

Clean if dirty.

8 Retaining Ring

To secure the bottom of the boot.

Air Spring Damper Clamp Tightening

- Use the (VAG 1682) as shown in the illustration. When doing that, make sure the jaws on the (VAG 1682) are centered - arrow A - on the clamp.

- Tighten the clamp by turning the spindle using a torque wrench (do not tilt the pliers).

Tightening specification: 8 Nm

Use a torque wrench with 4 to 20 Nm range (for example, (VAG 1410))

Make sure the spindle threads - A - on the (VAG 1682) move freely. Grease them with MoS2 grease if necessary.

If they do not move freely, for example, due to dirt in the threads, the required clamp tension will not be achieved at the tightening specification.

Visual Inspection

- Check the rubber boot - 1 - for damage. The surface must be regular and uniform.

- Replace the air spring damper if damaged.
