Gear Oil Level In Front Final Drive, Checking and Filling
Gear Oil Level in Front Final Drive, Checking and Filling
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Oil Collecting and Extracting Device (V.A.G 1782)
• Protective goggles
Procedure
There is a risk of damaging the transmission.
• After roughly September 2008, a new gear oil will be used in the production of "Multitronic 0AW FWD" transmissions. These transmissions have a filler plug - arrow - with inner-Torx and also have new transmission code letters.
• For transmissions before the change, the previous gear oil is used. These transmissions have a filler plug - arrow - with an inner hex socket.
• Do not mix the axles oil, not even in small quantities. This will cause the sealing rings to leak. Note the allocation of the axle oils according to the transmission code letters. Refer to the Electronic Parts Catalog (ETKA). Only axle oil for "Multitronic 0AW" which can be obtained as a replacement part must be used in front final drive.
• Replace the filler plug after checking the level. Always pay attention to the allocation according to the transmission codes, refer to the Electronic Parts Catalog (ETKA). Compare the old and new filler plug to prevent leakage on the transmission.
• Gear oil temperature from approximately 20 °C (68 °F) (room temperature) to maximum 50 °C (122 °F).
• Move the vehicle onto a 4-column shop hoist or over a work pit so it is completely level.
• After stopping the engine, wait 5 minutes so that the gear oil can drip out.
• Read the general repair instructions, refer to => [ Repair Information ] Repair Information.
• Guidelines for clean working conditions when working on automatic transmission, refer to => [ Clean Working Conditions ] Clean Working Conditions.
• Always maintain the specified transmission fluid level; the transmission is very sensitive to overfilling.
• After repairs where the gear oil is drained, for example, after removing the front final drive cover, the front final drive must be refilled with gear oil, refer to => [ Gear Oil in Front Final Drive, Filling after Repair ] Gear Oil In Front Final Drive, Filling After Repair.
- Remove the right drive axle cover - 1 - in the wheel housing.
- If present, remove the bolts - arrows - and remove the heat shield from the right drive axle.
- Position the (V.A.G 1782) under the right side of the transmission.
• Follow all disposal regulations.
- Remove locking plug - arrow -.
- Check the oil level with a self made tool for example with a bent wire.
• Specified value: The oil level is correct if the front final drive is full, 20 mm under the lower edge of the oil fill hole.
Too little gear oil:
There is a risk of damaging the transmission.
• There are various gear oils for the "Multitronic 0AW transmission".
• The only gear oil that can be used is the one available as a replacement part for the transmission code letters.
• Mixing the gear oils, even in minimal amounts, is not allowed The result would be leaks in the transmission.
- Fill a little with gear oil and wait 5 minutes.
• Note the allocation of the axle oils according to the transmission code letters. Refer to ETKA)
Too much gear oil:
- Remove gear oil and wait 5 minutes.
• A waiting time of at least 5 minutes is required so that the internal oil level can equalize.
- Repeat the oil level test until the oil level is correct.
• Replace the filler plug after checking the level. Always pay attention to the allocation according to the transmission codes, refer to the ETKA.
- Tighten the new sealing plug.
• Tightening specification, refer to => [ Front Final Drive, Shaft Seal Overview ] Front Final Drive, Shaft Seal Overview.
- If equipped, install the drive axle heat shield, refer to => [ Driveshaft Heat Shield - Tightening Specification ] Transmission, Installing.
