Transmission, Removing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Pry Lever - Remove Outside Mirror (80 - 200)

Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A)

Transmission support (T40173)

Procedure

Lock carrier and torque support installed.

Reinstall cable ties that were loosened or cut off during removal at same locations during installation.

CAUTION!
Heed appropriate instructions for battery disconnection.

- Switch ignition off.

So that the front wheels can still be turned with the battery disconnected, the battery may only be connected when ignition key is inserted.

- Disconnect battery.

- Remove front and rear noise insulation by loosening fasteners - 2 - and, if equipped, - arrow -.





- Remove heat shields - arrow - for left and right drive axles.





- Remove left and right drive axles from transmission flange shafts.

- Disconnect ATF pipe bracket - arrow -.





Observe cleanliness rules when working on automatic transmissions => [ Clean Working Conditions ] Clean Working Conditions.





To collect escaping ATF, lay a clean cloth under the separating point.

- Remove transmission to engine connecting bolts - 8 through 10 -.





Flex joint in front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10°, otherwise it may be damaged.





- Remove bolts - 2 - on the rear bracket for the front exhaust pipe.

Disregard items - 1 and 3 -.

- Place a piece of wood, approximately 30 mm thick - arrow - between the transmission and the subframe crossbrace, as illustrated.





- Remove tunnel crossmember bolts - arrows -.





- Remove front crossmember - arrows -.





- Loosen clamping sleeves - 1 - and - 2 -.





- Lower catalytic converters with the rear muffler and have a second technician remove the tunnel cross member.

- Secure the catalytic converters and muffler with the clamping sleeves.

- Position the Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A) with the universal mount (T40173) on the bottom of the transmission and secure it with a strap - 1 - as shown in the illustration.





- Remove crossmember from subframe - arrows -.





- Lower transmission using Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A) until upper bolts for the transmission to engine connection are accessible from the rear.

CAUTION!
There is a risk of destroying the transmission control module (Mechatronic) with static discharge.

Always "discharge static electricity" by touching a grounded object, e.g. vehicle ground, the vehicle or the hoist.

Do not touch contacts in transmission connector with hands.

- Disengage electrical harness connector - 1 - and disconnect from transmission.





- Move wiring harness - arrows - to engine clear.

For the sake of illustration, shown with transmission removed.

- Disconnect Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor (G28) electrical connector - arrow -.





- Mark installation position of support bracket for selector lever cable.





- Remove bolt - 1 - support bracket for selector lever cable.

- Press selector lever cable ball socket - A - off the selector shaft lever using the Pry Lever - Remove Outside Mirror (80 - 200).





Take care not to bend or kink selector lever cable.

- Loosen bolts - arrow - on torque support stop.





- Press torque support stop upward and retighten bolts to 23 Nm.

Adjusting torque support stop prevents engine from sinking down after removing the front transmission.

- Remove transmission to engine connecting bolts - 1 through 7 -.





- Press transmission off the engine and lower it carefully using the Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A).

The starter remains in the installation position.
