Tunnel Crossmember

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A)

Wooden block

Removing

- Remove rear noise insulation by loosening fasteners - 2 - and, if equipped, - arrow -.





Vehicles equipped with double pipe exhaust:

- Remove front exhaust pipe rear bracket by removing bolts - 1 to 3 -.





A vehicle with two front exhaust pipes is illustrated here.

Continuation for all vehicles:

- Remove crossmember from subframe - arrows -.





- Remove crossbrace - arrows -.





CAUTION!
Flex joint in front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10°, otherwise it may be damaged.

- Disconnect exhaust system at double clamp - arrow -.





CAUTION!
For further steps, lock carrier must be installed and it must not be in the service position. Radiator Support

This assures that the engine/transmission subframe will not slide backward when the tunnel cross member is loosened.

The engine is supported by the engine torque support on the lock carrier.

- Place plunger of Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A) with a block of wood inserted in between - 1 - on transmission at bottom.





- Raise transmission slightly using Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A).

- Remove tunnel crossmember bolts - arrows -.





- Remove nuts - 1 - and remove tunnel crossmember.





Ignore the bolts - 2 -.

Installing

Installation is in reverse order of removal.

Vehicles equipped with double pipe exhaust:

- Install bracket for the front exhaust pipes.

- Install exhaust system free of tension.

Continuation for all vehicles:

- Install front crossbrace

- Install subframe crossbrace.
