Muffler Overview
• The exhaust manifold and turbocharger are one component; Removing and Installing, refer to => [ Turbocharger ] Turbocharger.
1 Seal
• Replace
2 Heated Oxygen Sensor (G39) and Oxygen Sensor Heater (Z19)
• Coat the threads on the new heated oxygen sensors with assembly paste.
• When installing a used oxygen sensor, coat threads with hot bolt paste; hot bolt paste, refer to the Parts Catalog
• Assembly paste or hot bolt paste must not get onto slots of the oxygen sensor body.
3 Oxygen Sensor after Three Way Catalytic Converter (G130) and Heater for Oxygen Sensor 1 after Catalytic Converter (Z29)
• Coat the threads on the new heated oxygen sensors with assembly paste.
• When installing a used oxygen sensor, coat threads with hot bolt paste; hot bolt paste, refer to the Parts Catalog.
• Assembly paste or hot bolt paste must not get onto slots of the oxygen sensor body.
4 Catalytic Converter
• Protect catalytic converter from shocks and impact stress
• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Catalytic Converter ] Catalytic Converter
• Align the exhaust system free of tension. Refer to => [ Exhaust System, Aligning ] Exhaust System, Aligning
5 Front Muffler
Danger of damaging the decoupling element.
• Decoupling element must not be bent more than 10°.
• Do not load decoupling element on cable.
• Do not damage wire mesh at decoupling element.
• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Front Muffler ] Front Muffler
• Align the exhaust system free of tension. Refer to => [ Exhaust System, Aligning ] Exhaust System, Aligning
6 Front Clamping Sleeve
• Before tightening, align exhaust system free of tension. Refer to => [ Exhaust System, Aligning ] Exhaust System, Aligning
• Tighten bolts evenly
7 Nut
• 23 Nm
8 Center Muffler
• Original equipment as one unit with rear mufflers. For repairs, replace each separately.
• For removal, remove the diagonal braces.
• Separating point, refer to => [ Center Muffler and Rear Muffler, Separating ] Center Muffler and Rear Muffler, Separating
• Align the exhaust system free of tension. Refer to => [ Exhaust System, Aligning ] Exhaust System, Aligning
9 Left Rear Clamping Sleeve
• For individual replacement of center and rear mufflers
• Before tightening, align exhaust system free of tension. Refer to => [ Exhaust System, Aligning ]
• Tighten threaded connections evenly.
10 Left Rear Muffler
• Original equipment as one unit with center muffler and tailpipe
• For removal, remove the diagonal braces.
• Replace the center mufflers, the rear muffler and the tail pipe individually
• Separating point between center and rear muffler, refer to => [ Center Muffler and Rear Muffler, Separating ] Center Muffler and Rear Muffler, Separating
• Separating point between the rear muffler and the tailpipe, refer to => [ Exhaust Tail Pipes, Replacing ] Exhaust Tail Pipes, Replacing
• Align the exhaust system free of tension. Refer to => [ Exhaust System, Aligning ] Exhaust System, Aligning
11 Tail Pipe
• Original equipment as one unit with rear muffler. For repairs, replace each separately.
• Separating point, refer to => [ Exhaust Tail Pipes, Replacing ] Exhaust Tail Pipes, Replacing
• Aligning, refer to => [ Exhaust Tail Pipes, Replacing ] Exhaust Tail Pipes, Replacing
12 Clamp
• 23 Nm
13 Suspended Mount
• Replace if damaged
• Check pretension, refer to => [ Exhaust System, Aligning ] Exhaust System, Aligning
14 Nut
• 20 Nm
• Replace
15 Nut
• 23 Nm
16 Right Rear Muffler
• Original equipment as one unit with center muffler and tailpipe
• For removal, remove the diagonal braces.
• Replace the center mufflers, the rear muffler and the tail pipe individually
• Separating point between center and rear muffler, refer to => [ Center Muffler and Rear Muffler, Separating ] Center Muffler and Rear Muffler, Separating
• Separating point between the rear muffler and the tailpipe, refer to => [ Exhaust Tail Pipes, Replacing ] Exhaust Tail Pipes, Replacing
• Align the exhaust system free of tension. Refer to => [ Exhaust System, Aligning ] Exhaust System, Aligning
17 Right Rear Clamping Sleeve
• For individual replacement of center and rear mufflers
• Before tightening, align exhaust system free of tension, refer to => [ Exhaust System, Aligning ]
• Tighten threaded connections evenly.
18 Bolt
• Replace
• 20 Nm
19 Suspended Mount
• Replace if damaged
• Check pretension, refer to => [ Exhaust System, Aligning ]
20 Seal
• Replace
21 Nut
• 25 Nm
22 Nut
• 40 Nm
• Replace
• Coat turbocharger stud bolts with hot bolt paste.
• Hot bolt paste, refer to the Parts Catalog
Installed Position of Front Clamping Sleeve
- Install clamping sleeve in angle position shown.
• Threaded connections point toward the right.
• Nuts face up.
• alpha = approximately 20°
Installed Position of Rear Clamping Sleeve
- Install double clamps so that the bolt ends do not project over lower edge of double clamp.
• Installed position: Threaded connections point forward.
Diagonal Braces
- To remove, remove the diagonal braces for the center and rear mufflers - 1 - and - 2 -.
- Install diagonal braces.
