ATF, Draining

The illustration on the reservoir for (VAS 5162) in the upper left graphic refers to the use of special ATF for CVT transmissions.

In addition, the necessary work steps for filling are illustrated, which are described as follows:

There is a risk of damaging the transmission.

Engine must not be started if only a small amount or no ATF is in the transmission after repair work or after significant ATF loss.

Do not let the engine run or tow the vehicle without ATF.

In this case, a preliminary filling with 5.5 to 6 liters ATF must be performed.

Depending on the version, ATF inspection plugs - A - of different lengths are installed. The ATF check plug must be replaced according to the ATF test level. Always pay attention to the allocation according to the transmission codes, refer to the Electronic Parts Catalog (ETKA). To prevent damaging the transmission, compare the old and new ATF inspection plug.

The engine is off.

Move the vehicle onto a 4-column shop hoist or over a work pit so it is completely level.

The selector level is in "P".

Electro-mechanical parking brake is tightened.

- Remove the rear noise insulation.

- Place the (V.A.G 1782) under the transmission.

Danger of eye injury.

Wear protective goggles.

- Remove the ATF check plug - A -.

- Drain the ATF.

Observe disposal regulations!

Varying ATF check plugs and oil level tube are installed depending on the date of manufacture. Always pay attention to the allocation according to the transmission codes, refer to the Electronic Parts Catalog (ETKA).

Transmissions with Long, Bent Oil Level Tube:

- Remove the oil level tube - A - with the (3438) from the ATF check hole and drain the remaining ATF.

Displayed in the illustration from the side.

The oil level tube must be replaced.

- Press the new oil level tube - A - into the ATF check hole by hand - B -.

Installed position: The large tab - 1 - on the oil level tube must be positioned in the recess - 2 - on the ATF check hole.

Transmissions with Short, Narrow Oil Level Tube:

- Remove the oil level tube - A - with the (3438) from the ATF check hole and drain the remaining ATF.

Displayed in the illustration from the side.

The oil level tube - A - must be replaced.

The O-ring - 1 - must be installed correctly in the oil level tube groove.

- Press the new oil level tube - A - straight into the ATF check hole by hand - B -.

The O-ring on the oil level tube - A - seals the oil level height tube - C -. Only in this way can the ATF level be installed correctly.

Ignore (3438).

Transmission Filled with ATF

The illustration on the reservoir for (VAS 5162) in the upper left graphic refers to the use of special ATF for CVT transmissions.

In addition, the necessary work steps for filling are illustrated, which are described as follows:

There is a risk of damaging the transmission.

For the correct ATF allocation, refer to the Electronic Parts Catalog (ETKA). Only the ATF available for the replacement part for the "Multitronic 0AW FWD" can be used for the "Multitronic 0AW FWD" transmission.

Mixing the ATF, even in minimal amounts, is not allowed. The result would be transmission malfunction or failure.

The ATF filler tool must be clean and the ATF must not be mixed with any other oils!

Before installing a replacement transmission, always clean out the ATF cooler and ATF pipes using compressed air (maximum 10 bar). Refer to => [ ATF pipes and ATF Cooler, Cleaning ] Procedures.

- Fill the (VAS 5162) reservoir with the ATF for the "Multitronic 0AW FWD"; ATF specification, refer to the Electronic Parts Catalog (ETKA).

- Secure the filled reservoir as high as possible on the vehicle.

The shut-off valve on the (VAS 5162) must be closed.

- Remove the O-ring - 1 - on the connection - 2 - on the (VAS 5162).

Danger of misfilling the transmission.

The connection - 2 - must be mounted by hand all the way into the inspection plug hole on the transmission without the O-ring.

The oil level tube can be pushed into the ATF inspection plug hole in the upper position only when the O-ring is not on the connection - 2 -.

This is the only way to correctly check and/or adjust the ATF level to maximum.

- Install the (VAS 5162) connection, without the O-ring, all the way into the opening for the ATF inspection plug.

By doing so, the oil level tube is pushed into the correct installation position.

- Turn the valve to the filler hose - lower arrow -. The ATF flows into the transmission.

- Fill the transmission with at least 5.5 to 7 Liters of ATF.

- Move the selector lever into "P".

Immediately after starting the engine, let it run at 2,500 RPM.

Running the engine at high speeds is necessary to bleed the ATF pump after a transmission repair.

If the engine is not run at this high speed, the pump may become damaged as there is a short amount of time where it is driven without any ATF.

- Start the engine.

- Using the accelerator pedal, let the engine run briefly at 2,500 RPM.

- ATF level, checking and filling, refer to => [ ATF, Checking Level and Correcting ] ATF, Checking Level and Correcting.

Observe all notes and test requirements for "Checking ATF level and filling".
