Belt Pulley From A/C Compressor Version 2

• If the overload safeguard of the belt pulley is triggered, check the A/C compressor for ease of motion before replacing the belt pulley. If the A/C compressor is not operating smoothly, replace it completely.

• The function of overload protection for pulley is described in, for example, Self Study Program No. 240; Audi A2 Technical Information.

• To remove the belt pulley, it is not always necessary to detach the A/C compressor from the engine. Refer to TDI => [ A/C Compressor From Bracket ] A/C Compressor from Bracket, 6 cylinder gasoline => [ Compressor ] Compressor and W12=> [ A/C Compressor from Bracket ] A/C Compressor from Bracket. Depending on the engine type, it may be necessary to loosen the lock carrier from the vehicle and to pull it slightly forward (to make space).

• Mark direction of rotation of ribbed belt using chalk or felt-tip marker before removing. Running a used belt in the opposite direction could destroy it.

• Depending on engine and country version, different A/C compressors are installed (6 or 12-cylinder engine, gasoline or diesel engine). Refer to Electronic Parts Catalog (ETKA).

Removing

- Perform the preparatory work. Refer to => [ Pulley, Preparation for Replacing ] Pulley, Preparation for Replacing.

- Remove the bolt - A - (tightening specification: 20 Nm).






• To loosen and tighten bolt - A -, counterhold it at drive plate - B - using a commercially available pin wrench - C - (pin diameter 5.0 mm).

• Bolt - A - is to be replaced (because of locking compound).

• Clean the thread in the A/C compressor shaft before inserting the new bolt.

• If the belt pulley cannot be removed with the A/C compressor still installed, remove the A/C compressor from the engine. Refer to => [ A/C Compressor From Bracket ] A/C Compressor from Bracket.

- Carefully and uniformly pry off drive plate - A - using 2 screwdrivers - B -.






• Make sure that the collar for pulley - C - is not damaged when prying off drive plate - A -.

• There are different versions of pulley - C - and drive plate - A -, therefore note the exact assignment. => Electronic Parts Catalog

- Remove circlip - A -.






- Remove pulley - B -.

Installing

Installation is performed in the reverse order. Observe the following:

• Replace circlip - A -.

• When installing circlip - A -, note that it cannot be bent open more than is necessary for installation.

• Insert circlip - A - on correct side, the side with beveled insertion edge - C - faces away from A/C compressor (install flat side facing compressor).

• Ensure proper seating of circlip in groove on compressor flange.

• Clean compressor flange before fitting the pulley on, pulley must be able to be fitted easily. (fitting must be possible without much force).
