Air Bag Control Module: Service and Repair
Airbag Control Module J234
• Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Restraint System Components, Safety Precautions and Testing Procedures ] Description and Operation.
• Check the counter for the active headrests using Vehicle diagnostic tester if the airbag control module is being replaced. Both active headrests must be replaced if the counter is greater than "0". Refer to => [ Driver Active Head Restraint Igniter N419/Front Passenger Active Head Restraint Igniter N420 ] Driver Active Head Restraint Igniter N419/Front Passenger Active Head Restraint Igniter N420.
- Disconnect the ground cable from the battery with the ignition on.
- Remove the center console support.
- Remove rear center tunnel air distribution box.
- Vehicles with rear A/C unit: Free up electrical wires for rear climate sensors and lift rear A/C unit as far as possible from the center tunnel.
- Remove the nuts - 1 through 3 - and remove the airbag control module - A - from the threaded pins.
Before handling pyrotechnic components (for example, disconnecting the electrical connector), the person handling it must "discharge static electricity". This can be done by touching the door striker, for example.
- Slide the retainer - 7 - on the connector in the - direction of the arrow -.
- Press the release button - 6 -, opening the retainer - 5 - on the connector and remove the electrical connector - 4 -.
Installing
• Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Restraint System Components, Safety Precautions and Testing Procedures ] Description and Operation.
• Before handling pyrotechnic components (for example, connecting the electrical connector), the person handling it must "discharge static electricity". This can be done by touching the door striker, for example.
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
• Make sure the connectors are installed all the way in and are secure.
Ignition must be on when connecting battery. If pyrotechnic components (for example, airbag, belt tensioner) are not repaired correctly, they may deploy unintentionally after connecting battery. There must not be anyone inside the vehicle when connecting the battery.
When working on vehicles with the ignition turned on or where the engine has been started, there is a risk of unintentional engine start and of being poisoned by gas in closed areas. There is a risk of clothes and body parts being pulled or getting stuck.
Perform the following steps before turning on the ignition:
• Move the selector lever into P.
• Activate the parking brake
• Turn the ignition off.
• Open the hood.
• Connect the charger unit i.e., battery charger (VAS 5095A) to the battery jump start terminal for the 12V vehicle electrical system.
• Switch the ignition on.
- Connect the battery ground cable with the ignition turned on.
• If the airbag indicator lamp (K75) indicates a fault after installation, check the DTC memory, erase it and check it again. Refer to Vehicle diagnostic tester.
• After replacing the airbag control module (J234) , it must be coded. Refer to Vehicle diagnostic tester.
• The wiring harness serves as the ground connection for the airbag control module (J234).
Installation note: For example tightening specifications, replace components. Refer to => [ Airbag Control Module J234 ] Description and Operation.
