Removal and Replacement
Torque Converter
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Extractor (T40176)
• Engine and Transmission Holder (VAS 6095)
• Grease for clutch disc shaft splines (G 000 100)
Removing
• Secure the transmission to the (VAS 6095). Refer to => [ Transmission, Securing in Engine/Transmission Holder ] Transmission, Securing In Engine/Transmission Holder.
- Remove the left flange shaft. Refer to => [ Left Flange Shaft ] Left Flange Shaft.
- Secure the (T40176) to the torque converter - A - with the nut - B -.
- Rotate the (T40176) upward.
• To prevent the torque converter from tilting, counter hold it underneath as illustrated.
• Ignore - arrow -.
- Remove the torque converter from the input shaft - arrows - without tilting the converter.
- Set the torque converter down carefully, for example on the workbench.
Installing
Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:
- Always clean the torque converter bell housing in the area where the differential is accessed - arrow A - and the shaft seal - arrow B -.
• Replace the shaft seal between the differential and transmission housing - arrow B - if it is damaged. Refer to => [ Front Final Drive Overview ] Description and Operation.
- Fill the space between the sealing and dust lip half way with sealing grease (G 052 128 A1).
- Clean the splines on the input shaft - 2 - and the torque converter, remove any corrosion and apply a very thin layer of clutch disc spline grease (G 000 100) to the splines. Remove any excess grease.
- Slide the torque converter carefully onto the input shaft - arrow - using the (T40176). Be careful not to tilt the converter when sliding it on.
- Remove the (T40176) from the torque converter - A -.
- Remove the nut - B -.
- Install the left flange shaft. Refer to => [ Left Flange Shaft ] Left Flange Shaft.
