Description of On-Board Diagnostics

Notes on Troubleshooting:

The EDC III is connected to the diagnostic link. Any faults stored in memory can be read out with the Diagnostic Module. Troubleshooting is carried out as with other systems by following procedures listed on the service tester display screen and Electrical Diagrams. After connection to the Diagnostic Module the control unit identification is displayed, followed by the selection list.

1. Read defect code memory
2. Monitor status
3. Actuate components
4. Test procedure
5. Special functions
6. Test code
7. Clear defect code memory

- Troubleshooting with BMW Diagnostic System [Troubleshooting the EDC III system is only available using the BMW Diagnostic Tester System.]

- Battery charged, U-min = 12 Volt

- Removal and installation of control unit only with ignition switched off

The EDC system is protected by way of the EDC relay K67. The EDC does not operate if this relay fails. The EDC system is deactivated by means of the safety circuit integrated in the software of the control unit. Operation is then only possible in the fixed stage "hard" of the dampers.

Notes on working on the EDC system:

After all work on the EDC system which renders disconnection of connectors, removal/installation of electric/electronic components necessary, the defect code memory of the EDC system must be monitored and cleared if a defect code has been entered relating to the above specified work. On completion of work on the front axle system (front wheel suspension, shock absorbers, steering), implement the steering angle offset with the aid of the diagnostic program. For description and implementation of steering wheel offset see diagnostic program.
