Trunk / Liftgate Latch: Adjustments




51 24 004 - Adjusting rear lid lock (lower section of rear lid lock)





Note:
Rear lid must be correctly adjusted before adjustment of Soft Close Automatic.
If necessary - adjust rear lid to fit Adjustments.
For ideal adjustment, refer to Body gap dimensions.





Important!
Once plug connection to servomotor has been disconnected, rear lid can only be opened with central key (1).
Button (2) then does not function.

Insert central key (1) in lock cylinder.





Note:
This illustration displays the side view of the eccentric pin in the lower section of the trunk lid lock.
1 - Top dead center
Rear lid lock upper section unlocked
2 - Bottom dead center
Rear lid lock upper section locked





Lock rear lid lock upper section with a screwdriver.
Eccentric pin of rear lid lock lower section must now be at bottom dead center.





Open flap in luggage compartment panel on right Service and Repair.
Unfasten plug connection (1) and disconnect.
The eccentric pin now remains at bottom dead center even after the rear lid lock upper section has been unlocked.





Turn central key in lock cylinder to right, thereby unlocking rear lid lock upper section.

Important!
Rear lid lock upper section must be unlocked before each closing of rear lid (risk of damage).





Adjustment of Soft Close Automatic:
- Check fulcrum pads on lower section of rear lid lock for damage and replace if necessary.
- Close rear lid.
- Check height of rear lid to side panels.
For ideal adjustment, refer to Body gap dimensions, adjust if necessary.





Open rear lid.
Screw in rubber buffers (1) on left/right completely.





Lever out caps (1) from trim (2).





Height adjustment of trunk lid:

Note:
For purposes of clarity, shown here without trim for "tail panel at top".

- Slacken screws (1 to 3)
- Move rear lid lock lower section fully upwards
- Tighten down screws (1 to 3) again
- Close rear lid
- Measure and note down gap dimensions
- Open rear lid
- Slacken screws (1 to 3) and lower rear lid lock lower section by difference from desired dimensions
- Tighten down screws (1 to 3)
- Check adjustment and repeat if necessary
- Note down adjusted gap dimensions

Contact pattern test:
Coat rear lid lock upper section with grease.
1 - Rear lid lock upper section must not brush against lower section.
2 - Eccentric pin of rear lid lock lower section must not brush against upper section.
3 - Contact pattern of rear lid lock upper section on eccentric pin should be central (settling behavior of rear lid is compensated).





Important!
Observe screw length, use longer screws if necessary.

Correcting contact pattern:

Correction is performed by fitting or removing shims underneath screws (1 to 3).
- Remove trim for tail panel at top 51 46 050 Removing and Installing/Replacing Top Trim on Rear Apron
- Release screws (1 to 3)
- Tilt rear lid lock lower section forwards
- Carry out correction
- Check contact pattern again, repeat adjustment if necessary
Tightening torque 51 24 6AZ [1][2]Specifications.





Open rear lid.
Turn rubber buffers (1) until closed rear lid rests on buffers (1) on left/right.

Important!
Rear lid must not be higher than set gap dimensions as otherwise there will be a distortion of height adjustment!

Re-establish plug connection for rear lid lock lower section.





Remove central key (1) from lock cylinder.
Press button (2).
Eccentric pin of rear lid lock lower section turns to top dead center.
Close rear lid and check function of Soft Close Automatic, repeat if necessary.
Add final details to vehicle.
