11 37 012 - Removing and installing/replacing left intermediate levers (N73)
Special tools required:
- 11 9 470 11 9 470 Support
- 11 9 473 11 9 470 Support
- 11 9 474 11 9 470 Support
- 11 9 475 11 9 470 Support
- 11 9 476 11 9 470 Support
- 11 9 480 11 9 480 Lever
- 11 9 490 11 9 490 Holding Sleeve
(Cylinders 7 to 12).
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove left cylinder head cover [1][2]Removing and Installing/Sealing Left Cylinder Head Cover.
- Remove inlet and exhaust adjustment unit Removing and Installing/Replacing Inlet and Exhaust VANOS on Left Side (N73) on left side.
Important!
Camshaft bearing caps of cylinders 1 to 6 and 7 to 12 must not be mixed up.
Set eccentric shaft at worm drive as shown in illustration to maximal stroke.
Pretension torsion spring (1) with a cable strap, feed out from roller (2) and carefully relieve tension.
Rotate eccentric shaft as shown in illustration back to minimum stroke position.
Important!
Observe removal position of inlet camshaft.
One or more intermediate levers may be pressed out downwards when the bearing bracket is removed.
Important!
Risk of damage.
Set intermediate shaft lever (1) to minimum stroke.
Rotate inlet camshaft in direction of rotation until cam on 8th cylinder points vertically upwards as shown in illustration.
Release nuts and remove bearing cap R E1.
Important!
Do not mix up camshaft bearing caps for cylinders 1 to 6 with bearing caps for cylinders 7 to 12.
Installation:
Tightening torque, 11 31 1AZ 11 31 Camshaft.
Unscrew bolt (1).
Carefully unclip oil lines upwards in area (2).
Release nuts in area (3) from outside inwards.
Remove bearing bracket (4) towards top.
Illustrations show cylinders 1 to 6.
Clamp special tool 11 9 470 11 9 470 Support as illustrated in a vise.
Fit bearing bracket in reverse sequence on special tool 11 9 470 11 9 470 Support.
Lower section of bearing bracket (1) remains on cylinder head.
Important!
The lower section of the bearing bracket (1) is machined with the cylinder head and must not be mixed up.
Raise torsion spring (1) with special tool 11 9 480 11 9 480 Lever.
Remove intermediate lever (2) upwards.
Note:
One torsion spring holds two intermediate levers.
Installation:
Intermediate lever and rocker arm are run in together.
Used intermediate levers may only be reused in the same position.
Important!
Hold torsion spring (1) with special tool, attach special tool 11 9 490 11 9 490 Holding Sleeve.
Support end of torsion spring protected with special tool 11 9 490 on inlet camshaft.
Important!
Risk of damage.
Raise torsion spring on second side with special tool 11 9 480 11 9 480 Lever, remove intermediate lever upwards and secure with special tool 11 9 490 11 9 490 Holding Sleeve.
Important!
Risk of damage.
Important!
Intermediate levers (2) are divided into individual tolerance classes.
Only intermediate levers of the same tolerance class may be fitted in a single cylinder head.
The tolerance classes are designated as illustrated with numbers from 1 to 5.
Used intermediate levers (2) may only be reused in the same position.
Installation:
Ends of compression rings point upwards.
Make sure compression rings (1) are engaged at ends.
Rocker arms (1) are now freely accessible.
Installation:
Rocker arm (1) is attached with a spring clamp on hydro-element.
Before installing bearing bracket, make sure rocker arms (1) are correctly positioned.
Do not mix up used rocker arms.
Note:
Assembly position for installing intermediate levers.
Remove bearing bracket with inlet camshaft and mount eccentric shaft on special tool 11 9 470 11 9 470 Support.
Secure bearing bracket with special tool 11 9 473 11 9 470 Support.
Fit inlet camshaft (1) with special tool 11 9 476 11 9 470 Support and adjust, secure with special tool 11 9 475 11 9 470 Support.
Insert special tool 11 9 474 11 9 470 Support and tighten without play.
Set intermediate shaft to minimum stroke.
Fit preassembled bearing bracket (1) carefully on cylinder head inlet valves.
Installation:
Cam of inlet camshaft (4) faces vertically upwards at cylinder 8.
Secure nuts for bearing bracket (1) along lines (2) from inside outwards
Secure nut (3) for guide bearing.
Installation:
Tightening torque 11 31 1AZ 11 31 Camshaft
Rotate inlet camshaft back to 1st cylinder firing TDC position.
Inlet camshaft points downwards at 7th cylinder and upwards at 9th cylinder.
See illustration.
Important!
Intermediate shaft must be positioned at minimum setting, risk of damage.
Assemble engine.
Installation:
Clean all bearings and cams of inlet camshaft and lubricate with engine oil.
