Important!
After completion of work, check transmission oil level 00 11 500 - Checking/Topping Up Fluid Level in Automatic Transmission (GA6HP26Z/6HP32Z).
Use only the approved transmission fluid.
Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the automatic transmission!
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Disconnect battery Instructions for Disconnecting and Connecting Battery
- Remove heater bulkhead 51 71 085 Removing and installing center of assembly compartment bulkhead (except M57).
- Hold engine in transmission removal position.
- N73/M57: Position transmission lifter underneath.
- All others: with special tool 00 0 200 00 0 200 Cross Member
- Remove exhaust system Service and Repair.
- M57: after catalytic converter
- All others: complete
- Remove oxygen monitor sensors (except M57).
- Remove front engine underguard
- Remove reinforcement plate Service and Repair
Installation:
Important notes on installation are described in this work step.
Release screws and remove transmission underbody protection (1).
Remove heat shields (1) and (2).
Only M57:
Release screws and remove underbody protection (1).
Unfasten nut.
Remove cable (1).
Installation Note:
Adjust cable
- Release nut
- Adjust cable by means of holder (2)
- Spacing A = 1 mm
M67 only:
- Release screws.
- Remove holder.
Release screw (1).
Pull hydraulic lines (2) to transmission fluid cooler out of transmission housing.
N73 only: Release holder for oil lines on engine.
Installation Note:
Replace sealing rings.
BMW ALPINA B7 only
Pay attention to thermostat (2) when removing hydraulic lines (1)
Crank engine at central bolt in direction of rotation until a torque converter retaining screw is visible in opening.
Release retaining screws with special tool 24 1 110 24 1 110 Socket with Magnet.
Crank engine further and release remaining 3 bolts.
Tightening torque 24 40 1AZ [1][2]Specifications.
Unlock plug (1) and disconnect (except M57).
Unclip cable holder (1) from transmission housing (except M57).
Unclip cable from transmission.
Perform following tasks:
- Unlock and disconnect plug (1) by turning.
- Insert special tool 24 2 390 24 2 390 Covering Cap in sealing sleeve.
The operations are described in Replacing mechatronics Procedures (Important: Read and comply with important note!).
Supporting transmission:
Support with special tools 24 5 306 24 5 300 Supports, 24 5 301 24 5 300 Supports and 00 2 030 00 2 030 Universal Hydro-Lifter Basic Unit.
Set up special tool 24 5 306:
- All supports to "B".
- Supports 3 and 4 are at rear of transmission.
- Support lettering points forwards.
Securing torque converter against slipping out:
Install special tool 24 4 131 24 4 130 Locating Tool (basic unit) with corresponding blades in opening of transmission housing and clamp:
Prepare special tool 24 4 161 24 4 160 Support Bracket(1) with corresponding shaped sections:
Insert special tool 24 4 160 24 4 160 Support Bracket into opening of transmission housing and clamp gently with screw (1).
Twist in screw (2) and clamp down.
Then tighten down screw (1) briefly.
Further tasks:
Remove transmission cross-member.
Tightening torque 24 71 1AZ/2AZ 24 71 Transmission Mounts.
N73 only:
Release holder so that lines of power steering (1) do not collide with line from transmission oil cooler (2).
Remove propeller shaft Removing and Installing Complete Propeller Shaft:
- Remove propeller shaft from transmission.
- Release center bearing.
- Tie propeller shaft to one side.
If necessary, unlock or lock transmission lock Procedures.
Note:
Support front of engine on housing with an assembly aid (e.g. transmission lifter) when removing and installing transmission.
Do not lower transmission too far, and take car to avoid collisions, e.g.:
- M57: screws for catalytic converter.
Unfasten screws.
