Timing Cover: Service and Repair
11 14 110 - Removing and installing, sealing/replacing front timing case cover (M57T2)
Special tools required:
- 11 3 340
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove engine
- Remove cylinder head Removal and Replacement.
- Remove oil sump
- Remove vibration damper Service and Repair
- Replace crankshaft radial seal Service and Repair
Important!
Protect alternator against engine oil.
Cover alternator with suitable apparatus.
(Risk of damage).
Assemble charge air hoses without grease and dry.
Release screws.
Remove timing-chain cover.
Lock chain tensioner (1) at bottom with special tool 11 3 340 and remove.
Slacken nut (2).
Tightening torque: 13 52 2AZ 13 52 High-Pressure Pump Drive.
Detach clamping rail (3).
Detach guide rail (4).
Remove sprockets and chain.
Installation:
Check adapter sleeves (see arrows) for damage.
Replace seal.
Installation:
When repair work is carried out on the timing case cover, the timing case cover gasket must be cut through at the marked points (1).
Apply a thin coat of Drei Bond 1209 sealing compound (sourcing reference: BMW Parts Service) to ends (arrows) of timing case cover on both sides.
If necessary, remove water pump.
Fit timing-chain cover.
Insert all screws and pretighten to 5 Nm.
Note:
M7 screws.
Installation:

Assemble engine.
