Air Spring: Service and Repair




37 12 155 - Removing and installing/replacing left or right air spring





Warning!
Danger of injury!
Drain the air spring system before carrying out any work on the air supply unit, air pipes and air springs! Danger of injury if this instruction is not complied with!
Risk of damage!
The vehicle must not stand on its wheels when the air springs are depressurized! Otherwise the air spring struts will be damaged and later destroyed during driving!
Extreme cleanliness must be ensured in the connection area of the pipes during removal and installation. Even the smallest of dirt particles can cause leakage in the air spring system.





Note:
Read and comply with notes on air spring system Notes on Air Spring System.
In a warranty case, you must always provide a fault memory printout with the defective part, even where there is no fault memory entry.





Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Deactivate and empty air spring system Draining/Filling Air Spring System
- Remove rear wheel Removing or Installing Front or Rear Wheel





Important!
Do not use any tools to remove the lower section of the air spring.





Tilt lower section of air spring (1) by hand towards front/side.

Installation Note:
Lower section of air spring (1) can only then be engaged with retainer (2) if the air spring has already been turned clockwise up to the stop.
Align lower section of air spring (1) to retainer (2) and press until lower section of air spring (1) can be heard to snap into place.

Note:
Retainer (2) does not have to be replaced.





Press lower section of air spring upwards and turn air spring (1) against resistance of turning lock counterclockwise through A = 25° (turning lock on upper section of air spring is allowed to break off here).
Press air spring (1) together and place to one side.

Installation Note:
Insert air spring (1) into take-up locator or frame side member and turn clockwise through A = 25°. This ensures correct alignment of lower section of air spring to retainer.

Important!
The air line must not slip out of the groove in the upper air spring section during installation. For this purpose, the air line must be pulled downwards during installation.





Important!
Do not kink, twist or crush lines.





Unfasten banjo bolt (2).
Moisten protective gaiter at opening (see arrow) with water/soapy solution.
Remove pipe (1) with banjo bolt (2) and gaiter from air spring. Banjo bolt (2) remains on pipe.
Seal pipe (1) or connection of air spring (3) with adhesive tape.
Remove air spring (3).

Installation Note:
Check banjo bolt (2) for dirt, clean if necessary. Then screw in carefully by hand to avoid damaging the plastic thread and with it the air spring (3).
Tightening torque 37 12 3AZ Control and Suspension Elements, Rear.





Installation Note:
Check pipe (1) and retainer (3) for damage, replace if necessary.
Check protective gaiter (2) for damage, replace if necessary.
Align protective gaiter (2) by way of opening for pipe to upper section of air spring (4) and install.

Note:
Air spring may be reinstalled despite the turning lock (arrow) having been broken off.





Replacement:
Modify protective gaiter.
Release banjo bolt at air spring connection.





After installation:
- Activate and fill air spring system Draining/Filling Air Spring System
