Case Extension Replacement

Tools Required

J 36850 Transjel

Removal Procedure

1. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair).
2. Remove the vehicle speed sensor. Refer to Vehicle Speed Sensor Replacement (Service and Repair).
3. Remove the right front tire and the wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).

Important: Carefully guide the right drive axle output shaft past the lip seal. Do not allow the shaft splines to contact any portion of the lip seal surface.


4. Remove the right drive axle from the vehicle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement (Service and Repair).




5. Remove the case extension bolts.




6. Loosen the torque strut bracket to engine bolts as needed.
7. Swing the bracket out of the way.




8. Remove the case extension assembly and the seal.




9. Remove the thrust bearing and the thrust bearing washer.


Installation Procedure




1. Install the washer and the thrust bearing onto the final drive assembly. Use the J 36850 or the equivalent (petroleum jelly), in order to retain the washer and the bearing.




2. Install the seal and the case extension.





Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice.

3. Install the torque strut bracket to engine bolts.

Tighten the bolts to 65 N.m (48 lb ft).




4. Install the case extension bolts.

Tighten the bolts to 36 N.m (26 lb ft).

5. Install the right drive axle to the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement (Service and Repair).
6. Install the right front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).
7. Install the vehicle speed sensor. Refer to Vehicle Speed Sensor Replacement (Service and Repair).
8. Lower the vehicle.
9. Fill the transaxle to the proper level. Refer to Fluid Capacity Specifications.
10. Inspect the transaxle fluid level. Refer to Transmission Fluid Check (4T65-E Automatic Transaxle).
11. Inspect for fluid leaks.
