Transmission Replacement

EN-45059 - Angle Meter
For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools Tools and Equipment.
Removal Procedure
1. Remove the battery tray. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement Battery Tray Replacement.
2. Remove the wiring harness starter motor from the transmission.
3. Remove the transmission range selector lever cable and bracket. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Bracket Replacement Range Selector Lever Cable Bracket Replacement.
4. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Standard) Service and Repair.
5. Remove the left front compartment splash shield.
6. Drain the transmission fluid.
7. Disconnect the electrical connector (1) transmission control module (TCM), then disconnect the connector from the transmission.
8. Remove the transmission fluid cooler inlet pipe from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet Pipe Replacement Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe Replacement.
9. Discard the inlet pipe seal.
10. Remove the transmission fluid cooler outlet pipe from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe Replacement Transmission Rear Mount Bracket Replacement (AWD).
11. DISCARD the outlet pipe seal.
12. Plug and/or cap the pipes and the transmission to prevent contamination.
13. Remove the transmission vent hose.
14. Remove the 2 upper transmission bolts (1).
15. Raise the vehicle.
16. Remove the drivetrain and the front suspension frame.
17. Disconnect the left front wheel drive shaft from the transmission. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Left Side Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Left Side.
18. Remove the front wheel drive intermediate shaft from the transmission. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Intermediate Shaft Replacement Front Wheel Drive Intermediate Shaft Replacement.
19. Remove the transmission rear mount bracket from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Mount Bracket Replacement - Rear Transmission Mount Bracket Replacement - Rear.
20. Remove the transmission front mount from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Front Mount Replacement Transmission Front Mount Replacement.
21. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Replacement Service and Repair.
22. Remove the access cover from the transmission.
23. Mark the relationship of the flex plate to the torque converter for reassembly.
24. Remove and DISCARD the flex plate to the torque converter bolts (1).
25. Lower the vehicle.
26. Remove and DISCARD the 3 left transmission mount bolts from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement - Left Side Transmission Mount Replacement - Left Side.
27. Lower the engine and the transmission on the left hand side with the engine support fixture to allow clearance for removal.
28. Raise the vehicle.
29. Position a suitable transmission jack under the transmission.
30. Secure the transmission to the transmission jack using suitable straps or chains.
31. Remove the transmission bolts (1, 2, 3) and remove cover (4).
32. Remove the transmission bolts (1)
Note:
Insure the torque converter remains securely in place on the transmission input shaft while separating and removing the transmission.
33. Separate the transmission from the engine.
34. Lower the transmission from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
1. If the removed transmission will be reinstalled, re-cut the 3 threads of torque converter.
2. Raise the transmission with the transmission jack and position the transmission to the engine.
Caution:
Refer to Fastener Caution Fastener Caution.
3. Install the transmission bolts (1) and tighten to 70 Nm (52 lb ft).
4. Install the transmission bolts (1) and tighten to 45 Nm (33 lb ft).
5. Install the transmission bolt (3) and tighten to 45 Nm (33 lb ft).
6. Install the transmission bolt (2) and tighten to 70 Nm (52 lb ft).
7. Remove the transmission jack.
8. Lower the vehicle.
9. Raise the engine and the transmission on the left hand side with the engine support fixture.
10. Install the 3 NEW left transmission mount bolts but do not tighten yet.
11. Raise the vehicle.
Note:
Service may offer bolts that are not microencapsulated. If this is the case apply thread lock agent to the bolts.
If fasteners are microencapsulated, install NEW torque converter to flywheel bolts. DO NOT reuse the old bolts.
12. Install the NEW flex plate to torque converter bolts (1) and tighten to 60 Nm (44 lb ft).
13. Install the access cover on the transmission.
14. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Replacement Service and Repair.
15. Install the transmission rear mount bracket to the transmission. Refer to Transmission Mount Bracket Replacement - Rear Transmission Mount Bracket Replacement - Rear.
16. Install the transmission front mount to the transmission. Refer to Transmission Front Mount Replacement Transmission Front Mount Replacement.
17. Install the front wheel drive intermediate shaft to the transmission. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Intermediate Shaft Replacement Front Wheel Drive Intermediate Shaft Replacement.
18. Install the left front wheel drive shaft to the transmission. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Left Side Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Left Side.
19. Install the drivetrain and the front suspension frame.
20. Install the upper transmission bolts (1) and tighten to 60 Nm (44 lb ft).
21. Remove the engine support fixture.
22. Tighten the 3 NEW left transmission mount bolts a first pass to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).
Caution:
Refer to Torque-to-Yield Fastener Caution Torque-to-Yield Fastener Caution.
23. Tighten the 3 transmission mount bolts a final pass to an additional 60° - 75°, using the EN-45059 - meter.
24. Raise the vehicle.
25. Install the left front compartment splash shield.
26. Lower the vehicle.
27. Install the transmission fluid cooler outlet pipe to the transmission. Use a NEW seal. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe Replacement Transmission Rear Mount Bracket Replacement (AWD).
28. Install the transmission fluid cooler inlet pipe to the transmission. Use a NEW seal. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet Pipe Replacement Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe Replacement.
29. Connect the electrical connector (1) transmission control module (TCM), then connect the wiring harness to transmission.
30. Install the transmission range selector lever cable and bracket. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Bracket Replacement Range Selector Lever Cable Bracket Replacement.
31. Adjust the automatic transmission range selector lever cable. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Adjustment Adjustments.
32. Install the wiring harness starter motor to the transmission.
33. Install the transmission vent hose.
34. Fill the transmission with the correct fluid.
35. Check the transmission fluid level. Refer to Transmission Fluid Drain and Fill Transmission Fluid Drain and Fill.
36. Install the battery tray. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement Battery Tray Replacement.
