DTC B3849
Diagnostic Instructions
* Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle (Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview) prior to using this diagnostic procedure.

DTC Descriptor
DTC B3849 02
- Exterior Door Handle Switch Circuit Short to Ground
Diagnostic Fault Information
Circuit/System Description
The left front exterior door handle and right front exterior door handle switch signal circuits provide inputs to the driver door module (DDM) and passenger door module (PDM) when an exterior door handle switch is activated. These inputs allow the door module to detect a door open request. The door modules provide voltage to the door handle switches. If the door module detects that a ground is applied for greater than 30 seconds continuously, a DTC is set and the door module will ignore the door handle switch input.
Conditions for Running the DTC
* The DDSA must be powered.
* DTC B1325 Battery Voltage Out of Range, must not be current.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
The DDM or PDM detects the exterior door handle switch signal circuit is closed for more than 30 continuous seconds.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
The DDM or PDM ignores inputs from the exterior door handle switch until the switch changes state.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
* The condition responsible for setting the DTC no longer exists.
* A history DTC will clear once 40 consecutive malfunction-free ignition cycles have occurred.

Circuit/System Verification
1. Ignition ON, observe the scan tool driver door handle switch parameter while operating the exterior driver door handle. The reading should toggle between ACTIVE and INACTIVE.
2. Ignition ON, observe the scan tool passenger door handle switch parameter while operating the exterior passenger door handle. The reading should toggle between ACTIVE and INACTIVE.
Circuit/System Testing
1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the inoperative exterior door handle switch assembly.
2. Ignition OFF, scan tool OFF, test for less than 10.0 ohms between the ground circuit terminal 6 and ground.
• If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
3. Ignition ON, verify the scan tool door handle switch parameter displays INACTIVE.
• If not the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal 5 for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the appropriate door control module.
4. Verify the appropriate scan tool ext. door handle switch parameter located in the RCDLR miscellaneous inputs list displays INACTIVE.
• If not the specified value, test the appropriate signal circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the RCDLR.
5. Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal 5 and ground. Verify the scan tool door handle switch parameter displays ACTIVE.
• If not the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal 5 for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the appropriate door control module.
6. Verify the appropriate scan tool ext. door handle switch parameter located in the RCDLR miscellaneous inputs list displays ACTIVE.
• If not the specified value, test the appropriate signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the RCDLR.
7. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the appropriate exterior door handle switch assembly.
Repair Instructions
Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification (Verification Tests) after completing the diagnostic procedure.
* Front Side Door Outside Handle Replacement (Service and Repair)
