Windshield Replacement



Windshield Replacement


Tools Required
* J 24402-A Glass Sealant Remover (Cold Knife)
* J 39032 Stationary Glass Removal Tool
* Urethane Adhesive Kit GM P/N 12346392 or Equivalent
* Isopropyl Alcohol or Equivalent
* Cartridge-type Caulking Gun
* Commercial-type Utility Knife
* Razor Blade Scraper
* Plastic Paddle



Removal Procedure

1. Lower the folding top.
2. Lower the left and right door windows.
3. Open the hood.

Important: Before cutting out a stationary window, apply a double layer of masking tape around the perimeter of the painted surfaces and inner trim of the window.


4. Remove the windshield wiper arms. Refer to Windshield Wiper Arm Replacement (Service and Repair) .
5. Remove the air inlet screen panel. Refer to Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement (Service and Repair) .
6. Remove the rearview mirror. Refer to Inside Rearview Mirror Replacement (Inside Rearview Mirror Replacement) .
7. Remove the outside moisture sensor. Refer to Windshield Outside Moisture Sensor Replacement (Service and Repair) .

Important: The upper garnish molding must be lower in order to gain access to the screws along the edge of the upper windshield frame.


8. Remove the upper garnish molding. Refer to Windshield Garnish Molding Replacement (Service and Repair) .

Caution: If broken glass falls into the defroster outlets, it can be blown into the passenger compartment and cause personal injury.

9. Cover the following parts to protect from broken glass:

* Upper dash pad
* Defroster outlets and A/C outlets
* Seats and carpeting

10. Remove the windshield weatherstrip. Refer to Windshield Frame Weatherstrip Replacement (Windshield Frame Weatherstrip Replacement) .

Caution: When working with any type of glass or sheet metal with exposed or rough edges, wear approved safety glasses and gloves in order to reduce the chance of personal injury.





11. Remove the upper windshield lace, located on the top edge of the windshield (1).
It may be necessary to use a utility knife to trim top edge.





Important: Keep the cutting edge of the tool against the windshield. This will allow the urethane adhesive to be separated from the windshield. Leave a base of urethane on the pinchweld flange. The only suitable lubrication is clear water.


12. Use J 24402-A or J 39032 in order to cut the window from the pinchweld flange. Keep the cutting edge of the tool against the glass.





Important: Protect the lower edge of the instrument panel from the tool.


13. From inside the vehicle, remove the bottom of the window from the urethane adhesive using a long utility knife or similar tool.
Keep the cutting edge of the tool against the glass.




14. With the aid of an assistant, remove the window (1) from the vehicle.



Installation Procedure





1. With the aid of an assistant, install the window (1) into the opening. 2. Install the windshield weatherstrip. Refer to Windshield Frame Weatherstrip Replacement (Windshield Frame Weatherstrip Replacement) .
3. Install the upper garnish molding. Refer to Windshield Garnish Molding Replacement (Service and Repair) .
4. Install the rearview mirror. Refer to Inside Rearview Mirror Replacement (Inside Rearview Mirror Replacement) .
5. Install the outside moisture sensor. Refer to Windshield Outside Moisture Sensor Replacement (Service and Repair) .
6. Install the windshield wiper arms. Refer to Windshield Wiper Arm Replacement (Service and Repair) .
7. Install the air inlet screen panel. Refer to Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement (Service and Repair) .
8. Remove the protective coverings and tape from the vehicle.
9. Close the hood.
10. Raise the left and right door windows to the full up position.
11. Close the folding top.
