Harmonic Balancer - Crankshaft Pulley: Service and Repair




Crankshaft Balancer Replacement

Special Tools
* EN 46326 Flywheel Holding Tool
* J 41816 Crankshaft Balancer Remover
* J 41998-B Crankshaft Balancer Installer
* J 45059 Angle Meter

Removal Procedure

1. Remove the water pump and generator drive belt. Refer to Water Pump and Generator Belt Replacement (Water Pump and Generator Belt Replacement).
2. Remove the supercharger drive belt. Refer to Supercharger Belt Replacement (Supercharger Belt Replacement).
3. Remove the air conditioning and power steering drive belt. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor and Power Steering Pump Belt Replacement (Air Conditioning Compressor and Power Steering Pump Belt Replacement).
4. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair).
5. Remove the power steering gear. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement (Service and Repair).




6. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement (LC3) (Service and Repair)Starter Motor Replacement (LH2) (Service and Repair).
7. Install the EN 46326 .




8. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt.




9. Place the remover pilot into the end of the crankshaft.
10. Install the J 41816 on the crankshaft balancer.




11. Remove the crankshaft balancer using the J 41816 .
12. Ensure that you do not lose the oil pump drive to crankshaft balancer friction washer. The friction washer may come off with the balancer.
13. Clean and inspect the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Cleaning and Inspection ().

Installation Procedure

1. Ensure that the oil pump drive to crankshaft balancer friction washer is installed.




2. Position the crankshaft balancer on the nose of the crankshaft.




3. Press the crankshaft balancer in place using the J 41998-B .




4. Clean the crankshaft balancer bolt threads.
5. Apply engine oil to the crankshaft balancer bolt threads.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).

6. Install the crankshaft balancer bolt.

* First Pass-Tighten the bolt to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).
* Final Pass-Tighten the bolt an additional 120 degrees using the J 45059 .

7. Install the steering gear. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement (Service and Repair).




8. Lower the vehicle.
9. Remove the EN 46326 .
10. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement (LC3) (Service and Repair)Starter Motor Replacement (LH2) (Service and Repair).
11. Install the air conditioning and power steering drive belt. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor and Power Steering Pump Belt Replacement (Air Conditioning Compressor and Power Steering Pump Belt Replacement).
12. Install the supercharger drive belt. Refer to Supercharger Belt Replacement (Supercharger Belt Replacement).
13. Install the water pump and generator drive belt. Refer to Water Pump and Generator Belt Replacement (Water Pump and Generator Belt Replacement).
