Shift Control Assembly Replacement

Removal Procedure




1. Remove the shift control knob. Refer to Transmission Control Lever Knob Replacement (Transmission Control Lever Knob Replacement).




2. Remove the sound insulator foam block (1) from the console.
3. Remove the shifter boot from the shifter by pulling upward on the boot.
4. Place the shifter in the Neutral position.




5. Remove the 4 fasteners (2) securing the shift control assembly to the shift control adapter plate.
6. Remove the 4 fasteners (2) securing the shift control adapter plate to the tunnel reinforcement.




7. Remove the shift assembly clamp bolt (1).
8. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair).
9. Remove the exhaust system. Refer to Exhaust System Replacement (LSA) (Exhaust System Replacement)Exhaust System Replacement (LF1) (Exhaust System Replacement)Exhaust System Replacement (Single) (Exhaust System Replacement (Single))Exhaust System Replacement (LLT) (Exhaust System Replacement).
10. Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement (RPO LSA) (Service and Repair)Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement (RPO LLT/LF1with MX7 or MN6) (Service and Repair)Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement (RPO LLT, LF1 with MXO) (Service and Repair).
11. Support the transmission with a suitable jack.




12. Remove the 4 fasteners (2) securing the transmission support. Refer to Transmission Support Replacement (Manual except CTS-V) (Service and Repair)Transmission Support Replacement (Automatic RWD except CTS-V) (Service and Repair)Transmission Support Replacement (Automatic CTS-V) (Service and Repair)Transmission Support Replacement (Manual CTS-V) (Service and Repair)Transmission Support Replacement (Automatic AWD) (Service and Repair).
13. Lower the transmission assembly to gain access to the top of the transmission.




14. Using a flat-blade tool, release the right side shift control rod pin retainer (1), then remove the pin.




15. Using a flat-blade tool, release the left side shift control rod pin retainer, then remove the pin. The graphic shows the transmission removed for clarity.
16. Remove the shift control assembly from the transmission. Remove the shift control assembly from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure





Note: Before installing the shifter, align shifter by installing the alignment pin (1). If a new shifter assembly is being installed, ensure the shifter is in the Neutral position and the alignment pin is fully seated

1. Install the alignment pin.





Note: If the existing shifter is being reinstalled, it will be necessary to access the service alignment pin which is located in the front of the shifter under the plastic boot (2).

2. Remove the pin from the front of the shifter and place it in the rear alignment hole.

Note: Before installing the shifter, ensure that the shift shaft it is clean of dirt or lubricants.

3. Install the shift control assembly to the transmission.




4. Align shift assembly clamp with shift rod, then install retaining bolt finger tight, Do Not tighten at this time.




5. Install the left side shift control rod pin. Rotate the pin in order to lock the retainer into place on the transmission.




6. Install the right side shift control rod pin. Rotate the pin in order to lock the retainer into place on the transmission.




7. Raise the transmission.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).

8. Install the 4 transmission support fasteners (2) ,then tighten to 60 Nm (44 lb ft).
9. Remove the jack supporting the transmission.
10. Install the propeller shaft (6). Refer to Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement (RPO LSA) (Service and Repair)Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement (RPO LLT/LF1with MX7 or MN6) (Service and Repair)Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement (RPO LLT, LF1 with MXO) (Service and Repair).
11. Install the exhaust system. Refer to Exhaust System Replacement (LSA) (Exhaust System Replacement)Exhaust System Replacement (LF1) (Exhaust System Replacement)Exhaust System Replacement (Single) (Exhaust System Replacement (Single))Exhaust System Replacement (LLT) (Exhaust System Replacement).
12. Lower the vehicle.




13. Tighten the shift assembly clamp bolt (1) to 30 Nm (22 lb ft)




14. Remove the alignment pin (1) from the rear of the shifter assembly, then install in service storage position.
15. Install rubber grommet covering alignment hole.




16. Install the 4 fasteners (1) securing the shift control adapter plate to the tunnel reinforcements, then tighten the bolts to 12 Nm (106 lb in).
17. Install the 4 fasteners (2) securing the shift control assembly to the shift control adapter plate, then tighten the fasteners to 18 Nm (13 lb ft)




18. Install the shifter boot to the shift rod by pushing down on the boot, ensure the boot is seated in the groove (1).




19. Install the sound insulator foam block into the console.




20. Install the shift control knob. Refer to Transmission Control Lever Knob Replacement (Transmission Control Lever Knob Replacement).
