Front Brake Caliper Replacement (J64)

Removal Procedure

Warning: Refer to Brake Fluid Irritant Warning Brake Fluid Irritant Warning.


Caution: Refer to Brake Fluid Effects on Paint and Electrical Components Caution Brake Fluid Effects on Paint and Electrical Components Caution.

1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.

2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation Service and Repair.




3. Hold the end of the brake pad spring down and carefully drive out the lower brake caliper pin (1) from the brake caliper.




4. Carefully drive out the upper brake caliper pin (1) from the brake caliper.




5. Remove the brake pad spring (1).




6. Remove the brake hose fitting bolt (1).

7. Cap the brake caliper inlet port to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

Note: Do not reuse the brake hose fitting gaskets.

8. Remove and discard the brake hose fitting gaskets (2) from the brake hose (3).

9. Cap the brake hose fitting to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.





Note: The brake caliper bolts must be replaced any time they are removed. Do not reuse the brake caliper bolts.

10. Remove and discard the brake caliper bolts (1).

11. Remove the brake caliper.




12. Remove the brake pads (1).

Installation Procedure




1. Install the brake pads (1).

2. Install the brake caliper to the steering knuckle.





Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution Fastener Caution.

Note: The brake caliper bolts must be replaced any time they are removed.

3. Install 2 new brake caliper bolts (1) and tighten to 150 Nm (111 lb ft) + 30 degrees.




4. Assemble the brake hose fitting bolt (1) and the 2 new brake hose fitting gaskets (2) to the brake hose (3).

5. Install the brake hose assembly to the brake caliper and tighten the brake hose fitting bolt to 40 Nm (30 lb ft).




6. Install the brake pad spring (1).




7. Insert the upper brake caliper pin (1) into the caliper housing and through the disc brake pad locating loops.

8. Carefully drive the upper brake caliper pin into the brake caliper.




9. Hold the end of the brake pad spring down and insert the lower brake caliper pin (1) into the caliper housing and through the disc brake pad locating loops.

10. Carefully drive the lower brake caliper pin into the brake caliper.

11. Bleed the hydraulic brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding (Manual) Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding (Manual)Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding (Pressure) Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding (Pressure).

12. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation Service and Repair.
