Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement
Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement
Removal Procedure
Note: The front and rear propeller shaft couplings can be serviced separately from the propeller shaft. If the propeller shaft coupling needs to be serviced, proceed to steps 11, and 12.
1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair).
2. Remove the exhaust heat shield. Refer to Exhaust Muffler Intermediate Heat Shield Replacement (Exhaust Muffler Intermediate Heat Shield Replacement).
3. Reference the rear propeller shaft couple to the rear drive flange (1).
4. Reference the front propeller shaft couple to the transmission output flange (1).
Note: DO NOT reuse the nuts (1). Discard and replace with NEW only.
5. Remove the bolts (2) and nuts (1) from the propeller shaft to the transmission output flange.
6. Support the propeller shaft with a suitable jack stand.
Note: DO NOT reuse the bolts (1). Discard and replace with NEW only.
7. Remove and discard the bolts (1) from the propeller shaft to the drive pinion flange.
8. Support the propeller shaft with a suitable jack stand.
9. Remove the propeller shaft support bearing bolts (1).
Note: If the propeller shaft coupler is found to be excessively worn or damage, proceed to step 11.
10. Remove the propeller shaft (1) from the vehicle.
11. Remove and discard the bolts (3) and the nuts (1) from the propeller shaft to the propeller shaft coupler (2).
12. Remove and discard the propeller shaft coupler (2).
Installation Procedure
Note: Steps 1 through 3 are to be performed only if the couplers are to be replaced.
1. Install the NEW propeller shaft coupler (2).
2. Install the NEW propeller shaft coupler bolts (3).
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).
3. Install NEW the propeller shaft coupler nuts (1) and tighten to 91 Nm (67 lb ft).
4. Apply a small amount of clean lubricant on the pilot shaft on the transmission drive flange and the differential drive flange.
5. Align the reference marks (1) on the propeller shaft and the transmission drive flange.
6. Install the propeller shaft (1) to transmission drive flange.
7. Install the propeller shaft bolts (2).
8. Install the NEW propeller shaft nuts (1) and tighten to 97 Nm (72 lb ft).
9. Align the reference marks (1) on the propeller shaft to the rear differential drive flange.
10. Install the NEW propeller shaft bolts (1) to the rear differential drive flange to tighten to 115 Nm (85 lb ft).
11. Install the center support bearing bolts (1) and tighten to 22 Nm (16 lb ft).
12. Remove the exhaust heat shield. Refer to Exhaust Muffler Intermediate Heat Shield Replacement (Exhaust Muffler Intermediate Heat Shield Replacement).
13. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
