Power Windows Malfunction (Convertible Rear Windows)

Power Windows Malfunction (Convertible Rear Windows)

Diagnostic Instructions

* Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle (Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle) prior to using this diagnostic procedure.
* Review Strategy Based Diagnosis (Strategy Based Diagnosis) for an overview of the diagnostic approach.
* Diagnostic Procedure Instructions (Diagnostic Procedure Instructions)provides an overview of each diagnostic category.

Diagnostic Fault Information

Circuit/System Description

The front power windows can be controlled by the driver window switch. The driver window switch contains window switches that control all power window operations. When a power window switch is activated to a desired position, power window switch will send a serial data message to the body control module (BCM) which will send the command to the appropriate window motor to move the window to the desired position. The window motors will also receive a signal from the BCM to globally express down while lowering the convertible top.

Circuit/System Verification

1. Ignition ON, observe the scan tool parameters listed below while using the left rear and right rear switch on the S79D window switch-driver. The values should change from Inactive to Active.

* Left Rear Window Main Control Down Switch
* Left Rear Window Main Control UP Switch
* Right Rear Window Main Control Down Switch
* Right Rear Window Main Control Up Switch

If the value is always Active or always Inactive, refer to Driver Window Switch Malfunction.

2. Command the M74RR window motor-right rear UP and DOWN with a scan tool. The M74RR window motor-right rear should perform the UP and DOWN command.

If the window does not perform as specified, refer to Rear Window Malfunction

3. Command the M74LR window motor-left rear UP and DOWN with a scan tool. The M74LR window motor-left rear should perform the UP and DOWN command.

If the window does not perform as specified, refer to Rear Window Malfunction.

Circuit/System Testing

Driver Window Switch Malfunction
1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the S79D window switch-driver.
2. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal 4 and ground.

If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance

3. Test for 5-10 V between the serial data circuit terminal 5 and ground.

If greater than the specified range, test the serial data circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K9 BCM.
If less than the specified range, test the serial data circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K9 BCM.

4. If all circuit test normal, replace the S79D window switch-driver

Rear Window Malfunction
1. Ignition OFF for, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate M74 window motor-rear.
2. After 10 minutes, test for less than 10 ohm between the ground circuit terminal 1 and ground.

If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.

3. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal 2 and ground.

If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.

4. Test for 5-10 V between the serial data circuit terminal 4 and ground.

If greater than the specified range, test the serial data circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K9 BCM.
If less than the specified range, test the serial data circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K9 BCM.

5. If all circuits test normal, replace the M74 window motor-rear.

Component Testing

Driver Window Switch
1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the driver window switch.
2. With the switch in the INACTIVE position, test for infinite resistance between the control terminals and the ignition terminal E listed below:

* LR window switch control terminals C and D
* RR window switch control terminals G and H
* RF window switch control terminals B and C
* Driver window switch control terminals A and E

If less than the specified value, replace the driver window switch.

3. With the switch in the UP position, test for less than 2 ohm between the control terminals and the ignition terminal 3 listed below:

* LR window switch control terminal D
* RR window switch control terminal G
* RF window switch control terminal B
* Driver window switch control terminal E

If greater than the specified range, replace the driver window switch.

4. With the switch in the DOWN position, test for less than 2 ohm between the control terminals and the ignition terminal 3 listed below:

* LR window switch control terminal C
* RR window switch control terminal H
* RF window switch control terminal C
* Driver window switch control terminal A

If greater than the specified range, replace the driver window switch.

Repair Instructions
