Drive Pinion and Ring Gear Replacement (195/218 mm Axle)
Disassemble Procedure
1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.
2. Remove the rear differential case assembly from the vehicle. Refer to Differential Case Replacement (250 mm Axle) Differential Case Replacement (250 mm Axle)Differential Case Replacement (195/218 mm Axle) Differential Case Replacement (195/218 mm Axle).
3. Remove the pinion yoke and the seal. Refer to Drive Pinion Flange/Yoke and/or Oil Seal Replacement (195/218 mm Axle) Drive Pinion Flange/Yoke and/or Oil Seal Replacement (195/218 mm Axle)Drive Pinion Flange/Yoke and/or Oil Seal Replacement (250 mm Axle) Drive Pinion Flange/Yoke and/or Oil Seal Replacement (250 mm Axle).
Note: The ring gear bolts are left handed threads.
4. Remove the ring gear bolts (1) from the differential case (2).
5. Using a brass drift and a hammer, remove the ring gear (2) from the differential case (1).
Note: Position a piece of wood under the differential housing to protect the pinion gear.
6. Using a hydraulic press and a piece of wood (1), remove the pinion gear (2) from the differential housing.
7. Remove the pinion bearings from the pinion bearings. Assemble Procedure
1. Install the ring gear (2) on the differential case (1).
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution Fastener Caution.
Note: Hand start the ring gear bolts in a criss cross pattern
2. Install the ring gear bolts (1) and tighten in sequence to 120 Nm (89 lb ft).
3. Determine and install the selective shim for the pinion gear. Refer to Pinion Depth Adjustment (195/218 mm Axle) Pinion Depth Adjustment (195/218 mm Axle)Pinion Depth Adjustment (250 mm axle) Pinion Depth Adjustment (250 mm axle).
4. Install the drive pinion bearings. Refer to Differential Drive Pinion Gear Bearing Replacement (195/218 mm Axle) Differential Drive Pinion Gear Bearing Replacement (195/218 mm Axle)Differential Drive Pinion Gear Bearing Replacement (250 mm Axle) Differential Drive Pinion Gear Bearing Replacement (250 mm Axle).
5. Install the drive pinion flange and the NEW pinion oil seal. Refer to Drive Pinion Flange/Yoke and/or Oil Seal Replacement (195/218 mm Axle) Drive Pinion Flange/Yoke and/or Oil Seal Replacement (195/218 mm Axle)Drive Pinion Flange/Yoke and/or Oil Seal Replacement (250 mm Axle) Drive Pinion Flange/Yoke and/or Oil Seal Replacement (250 mm Axle).
6. Install the rear differential case assembly. Refer to Differential Case Replacement (250 mm Axle) Differential Case Replacement (250 mm Axle)Differential Case Replacement (195/218 mm Axle) Differential Case Replacement (195/218 mm Axle).
7. Using the proper axle fluid, fill the rear differential with fluid. Refer to Differential Oil Replacement (195/218 mm Axle) Differential Oil Replacement (195/218 mm Axle)Differential Oil Replacement (250 mm Axle) Differential Oil Replacement (250 mm Axle).
