Pinion Depth Adjustment (250 mm axle)
Note: Ensure that the differential side bearings bores, and the pinion bearing cups are clean before proceeding.
1. Start with the original pinion shim, install the pinion shim between the pinion gear and the inner pinion bearing.
2. Set the pinion bearing pre-load. Refer to Differential Drive Pinion Gear Bearing Replacement (195/218 mm Axle) Differential Drive Pinion Gear Bearing Replacement (195/218 mm Axle)Differential Drive Pinion Gear Bearing Replacement (250 mm Axle) Differential Drive Pinion Gear Bearing Replacement (250 mm Axle).
3. Install the Differential Case Assembly. Refer to Differential Case Replacement (250 mm Axle) Differential Case Replacement (250 mm Axle)Differential Case Replacement (195/218 mm Axle) Differential Case Replacement (195/218 mm Axle).
4. Set the carrier bearing pre-load. Refer to Differential Carrier Bearing Preload Adjustment (195/218 mm Axle) Differential Carrier Bearing Preload Adjustment (195/218 mm Axle)Differential Carrier Bearing Preload Adjustment (250 mm Axle) Differential Carrier Bearing Preload Adjustment (250 mm Axle).
5. Set the back lash. Refer to Backlash Adjustment (195/218 mm Axle) Backlash Adjustment (195/218 mm Axle)Backlash Adjustment (250 mm Axle) Backlash Adjustment (250 mm Axle).
6. Take a pattern and shim until the pinion depth is good. Refer to Gear Tooth Contact Pattern Inspection Gear Tooth Contact Pattern Inspection.
7. Select the shim that is the proper thickness.
8. If the shim needs to be change, repeat steps 2 thru 6. Install the pinion shim between the pinion gear and the inner pinion bearing.
