Starter Motor: Service and Repair




Starter Replacement (V6)

Removal Procedure




Warning: Refer to Battery Disconnect Warning Service Precautions.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Single Battery) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Single Battery)Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (TP2) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (TP2).
2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.
3. Remove the oil pan skid plate bolts and plate, if equipped.




4. Remove the starter solenoid cable clip bolt (2) from the frame.




5. Remove the starter motor bolts.




6. Remove the starter solenoid cable lead nut (1).
7. Remove the starter solenoid cable lead (2) from the starter.




8. Remove the engine wiring harness lead nut (2).
9. Remove the engine wiring harness lead (5) from the starter.




10. Remove the starter from the vehicle.





Note: If the starter shield is damaged, replace the starter shield.

11. If replacing the starter, remove the starter heat shield.

Installation Procedure




1. If the starter was replaced, install the starter heat shield to the starter.




2. Position the starter to the vehicle.




3. Install the engine wiring harness lead (5) to the starter.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution Fastener Caution.

4. Install the engine wiring harness lead nut (2).

Tighten the nut to 3.4 Nm (30 lb in).




5. Install the starter solenoid cable lead (2) to the starter.
6. Install the starter solenoid cable (1) nut.

Tighten the nut to 9 Nm (80 lb in).




7. Install the starter motor bolts.

Tighten the bolts to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).




8. Position the starter solenoid cable clip to the frame and install the starter solenoid cable clip bolt (2).

Tighten the bolt to 10 Nm (89 lb in).




9. Position the oil pan skid plate and install the bolts, if equipped.

Tighten the bolts to 28 Nm (21 lb ft).

10. Lower the vehicle.
11. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Single Battery) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Single Battery)Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (TP2) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (TP2).
