Side Curtain Air Bag - Installation
INSTALLATION
WARNING: To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbag, seat belt tensioner, impact sensor or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment.
WARNING: To avoid serious or fatal injury when removing a deployed airbag, rubber gloves, eye protection, and a long-sleeved shirt should be worn. There may be deposits on the airbag unit and other interior surfaces. In large doses, these deposits may cause irritation to the skin and eyes.
WARNING: To avoid serious or fatal injury, use extreme care to prevent any foreign material from entering the side curtain airbag, or becoming entrapped between the side curtain airbag cushion and the headliner. Failure to observe this warning could result in occupant injuries upon airbag deployment.
NOTE: The following procedure is for replacement of an ineffective or damaged side curtain airbag. If the airbag is ineffective or damaged, but not deployed, review the recommended procedures for Handling Non-Deployed Supplemental Restraints. Service and Repair . If the side curtain airbag has been deployed, review the recommended procedures for Service After A Supplemental Restraint Deployment before removing the airbag from the vehicle. Service and Repair .
1. Check to be certain that the box nuts for the side curtain airbag are properly installed in the inner roof rail (1) and that they are in good condition.
2. Position the side curtain airbag (9) into the vehicle as a unit.
3. Engage the integral tabs on the side curtain airbag inflator mounting bracket into the slots in the inner roof side rail above the rear door opening.
4. Engage the two push-in fasteners (8) that secure the side curtain airbag channel to the roof side rail just forward of the inflator.
5. Install and tighten the screw (7) that secures the inflator mounting bracket to the box nut in the inner roof side rail. Tighten the screw to 7 Nm (62 in. lbs.).
NOTE: Be certain that the airbag cushion is not twisted during installation. If a colored stripe (red for right side bag, blue for left side bag) is visible on the cushion, the bag is twisted and must be untwisted before it is secured to the roof side rail.
6. Engage the six plastic push-in fasteners that secure the airbag cushion channel to the roof side rail.
7. Engage the four plastic push-in fasteners (5) that secure the front and rear tethers to the inner A and D-pillars.
8. Install and tighten the four screws (6) that secure the side curtain airbag channel to the box nuts in the inner roof side rail. Tighten the screws to 7 Nm (62 in. lbs.).
9. Engage the hooks (4) on the ends of the side curtain airbag front and rear tethers into the slots in the inner A and D-pillars (3).
10. Seat the plastic retainers that secure the side curtain airbag front and rear tether hooks to the inner A and D-pillars.
11. Reconnect the body wire harness connector (2) for the side curtain airbag to the connector receptacle at the back of the inflator on the roof side rail.
12. Reinstall the headliner into the vehicle. Headliner - Installation.
13. Do not reconnect the battery negative cable at this time. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Verification Test procedure should be performed following service of any SRS component. Service and Repair.
